01 January 1987 - Garage Full Of Flowers (Version) features on a free flexi disc in Debris Magazine, Issue 14.
Garage Full Of Flowers (Version)
Notes: The Manchester based magazine included a free 7inch flexi disc featuring The Metro-Trinity with their song Stupid Friends and Inspiral Carpets. The Stone Roses ''Tell Me' influenced the song 'Garage Full Of Flowers' featured here. The recording is different to the final recording which featured on the Planecrash E.P. Debris Magazine was a Manchester based magazine. A Stone Roses Interview featured inside too.
This version of the song would finally be released official twenty years later on the Keep The Circle Around - B-Sides And Udder Stuff download only release.

Only known recording for the unreleased 'Moon Over Waste Drive'. The Boardwalk venue and rehearsal rooms opened in 1984, Little Peter Street. The rehearsal rooms were based in the cellar. The venue was a converted school house, which was next door to where Joy Division used to rehearse in the city centre. 25 November 2015 From outlineonline.co.uk Outline Norwich Born & Bred webpage, Inspiral Carpets Interview by Lizzoutline 25/11/15:
I wanted to just ask you about the cow motif that that followed you through the years…how did that originate?
Clint: It was purely because where I used to live there was a cow field at the bottom of the garden and I used to take a lot of photos of cows! I was an amateur photographer. I had a friend who got me knocked off film from the local colour lab so I wasn’t constrained by the expense of buying film at the time. So I had all these photos of cows, and when we started the band, because I had all these colour transparencies of cows looking at the camera, we started projecting them behind the band onstage. We needed a backdrop and so we used what we had. People started mooing at gigs and they still do. We did a gig in Somerset recently and there were 9,000 people mooing. I had to explain to some people that they’re not booing, they’re mooing!

Gary 'Mani' Mounfield met the band on his dinner break by accident and asked to audition. Mani joined The Stone Roses on the same weekend. Info From Storytime with Boon - Episode 16 Podcast.

29, 30 & 31 December 1987 - Dung 4 Sessions, The Mill, Guide Bridge, Ashton-Under-Lyne
Keep The Circle Around / Seeds Of Doubt / Joe / Causeway / Inside My Head / Sun Don't Shine / Theme From Cow / Butterfly / 26 / Garage Full Of Flowers / 96 Tears
Notes: 96 Tears from 29 December 1987 would appear on the Plane Crash E.P.
I used to own the original Dung 4 cassette before the Cherry Red Records re-issue. This is a brilliant cassette, I still feel that a lot of tracks are superior to the released E.P versions. It should have been the bands first album. Although some of the songs were re-recorded and released officially, 26 is still unique to this release.
The version of Joe was made available in 1988, a year before Dung 4 was released, on the various artists compilation 'Manchester North Of England'. Inside My Head & Sun Don't Shine would not be officially released until Stephen leaves the band and Tom Hingley joins, the tracks were re-recorded and appear on Life. Seeds Of Doubt would also be re-recorded with Tom for This Is How It Feels B-Side.

BOP Cassettes
Joe (dung4)
Notes: Features the dung 4 recording of Joe and at the time was the only source for the track. The various artists compilation was distributed through BOP Cassettes in Manchester. It was presented by BOP Cassettes and City Life Magazine, compiled by Sarah Champion. The title comes from the notorious t-shirt designed by Identity Clothing. Over 20 years later the cassette would see a CD box set re-release with the same title, but a different tracklist.

The track though has been played live, with various arrangements, since 1987. The E.P. would finally see all the tracks available, digitally for the first time, on the 2003 Cool As boxset.

1988 - Martyn 'Bungle' Walsh audtions for the band
Notes: Martin “Bungle” Walsh was in 'The Next Step' before he joined. Apparently Martyn was the band's 13th bass player.

12 November 1988 Saturday - Co-Op Hall, Oxford * Doors Open: 19:30-23:30 * Ticket Price: £3.00 * Support Act(s): Arcane Dawn, Too Much Texas
Notes: Historically interesting concert for the band. Oxford formed band 'Too Much Texas' were first onstage and supported the band. The lead singer of 'Too Much Texas' was Tom Hingley. Stephen and David were about to leave the band and Tom would later audition and become the bands lead singer. This may have been the first time Tom met the band, in his hometown too. Oxford Live! ticket stubs do not mention Too Much Texas as the extra support act.
From August 2011 - MOJO Magazine interview with Tom Hingley: I'd been in a band called Too Much Texas and I'd met Paula Greenwood, who ran the Playtime label in Manchester. She took us under her wing and let us support the Inspirals at two or three gigs. They were a powerful band when Stephen Holt sang for them in those early days.

Inspiral Carpets - 14 November 1988 - Butterfly Unreleased Single
7inch White Label Promo Vinyl - AMUSE 4T Made In England - Playtime Records, 2nd floor, 63 Whitworth Street, Manchester, M1 3NY
Butterfly
You Cant Take The Truth
Notes: White Label Promo only but actually has a Pink label. Withdrawn second single. Inspiral Carpets left Playtime Records to form their own Cow Label, years later the band would be taken to court over the early departure. Playtime argued in court they had an exclusive license to the tracks. The Trainsurfing E.P. release date was delayed several times by Playtime which frustrated the band, hence forming their own Cow Records label and having complete control of their records. Playtime's distributor 'Red Rhino Records' went bankrupt, another reason for the delayed release.

? 1988 - Cricketers, Oval Cricket Ground Club, London *Support Act(s): Jesus Jones
Notes: Martyn's first show. Stephen's final show.
From 02 September 2011 - John Robb Louder Than War interview: Graham: Here’s an interesting snippet for your piece- this line up played one gig with Stephen at the Cricketers in London in 1988. So his is the definitive Cricketers line up, Martyn had just joined the band and we played one gig with that line up with Stephen. Jesus Jones supported us at the oval cricket ground club. I remember being on the bus before played and New Order doing were ”True Faith’ on Top Of The Pops. Everyone laughs, Graham is legendary in the band for his ridiculous memory recall.I ask if there is plan of action”...Graham: Oddly you are the first person to see this line up- that Cricketer’s gig there was no-one was there.

04 December 198? Sunday - The Adelphi Club, 89 De Grey Street, Hull, HU52RU * Ticket Price: £2.00 (Advance/Members/Students) / £2.50 Support Act(s): Too Much Texas
Notes: Poster includes 'Happening Manchester Band - Peel Favourites'. Not sure if this was Stephen's last show with the band?
David had left the band and Stephen and would soon follow. The lead singer of 'Too Much Texas' was Tom Hingley. Tom would audition for the band in the new year and leave Too Much Texas behind.

1988 - Stephen Holt & David Swift leave to form The Rainkings
From 02 September 2011 - John Robb Louder Than War interview: Stephen: ...I suppose regretted leaving the band for years. I left because of a few things, personal things going on in my life and maybe because of the way the band was moving and pressures of stuff led to it. When you are younger you make snap decisions, decisions I regretted over time but to get this second chance is brilliant.’...Clint - When you left the band it was understandable we were jumping off edge of a cliff! I was a self employed company director stepping into a world of paying ourselves ten quid a week to go full time- Steve had a decent job.’
Stephen: I had the Rainkings after that and gradually turned into a smoking and drinking club! We would rehearse a couple of times a week and then end up in the Marble Arch pub. Since then with music I was watching and lsitening and working- it was pipe and slippers time for me until that text!’
