1989
1989 - Noel Gallagher audtions for the band.
Notes: He apparently sang a rendition of Whisky but the band chose Tom Hingley instead. Noel became the bands roadie, working as a drum technican. Noel also toured with the band, occasionally doing press interviews abroad pretending to be Clint or Tom. Noel also signed shirts on behalf of the band, forging their signatures and other roadie related tasks too.
01 September 2011 - Tom Goodwyn wrote for the NME: Keyboardist Clint Boon told XFM of the reunion: We’ve not actually started writing new material yet, but we are getting in the studio with the intention of doing just that. We’re also going to be re-recording some of the songs we did back in the mid to late ’80s. We’re celebrating the birth of the band and going back to the garage-y roots...When Steve left the band, very amicably, that’s when Noel Gallagher auditioned to take his place as a singer for the Inspirals. We ended up with Tom Hingley, who’s a great singer and still is. Imagine if we’d taken on Noel? That’s another chapter of the Inspirals‘ history that we should maybe one day investigate.
From 02 September 2011 - John Robb Louder Than War interview: Clint: Liam Gallagher will be buzzing when he hears of the new line up, Noel as well. It’s weird to think but if Steve hadn’t left in the first place then Oasis might never have happened.
From 20 January 2018 Clint Boon Interview for the Winsford Guardian by Stephen Topping: Clint saw Noel Gallagher ‘day-in-day-out’ for four years while the future Oasis and High Flying Birds star was a roadie for Inspiral Carpets. He said: “When Stephen [Holt] left the band he wanted to be our singer, but we didn’t think his voice suited the band. So we took him on as our roadie and he was with us everyday. We would party together, we would go to the football together, we were extremely close. “It was quite obvious that one day he would do his own thing, but not even Noel could have imagined how successful he would be. “I still have to pinch myself that he is the same lad from Burnage that we had to pick up and take everywhere with us because he couldn’t drive.”
Craig Gill said: "I first met Noel when he came up to me in the Hacienda and told me he was a fan of the Inspirals and gave me a cassette of him playing acoustic guitar. He was still working for the gas board back then." "When our singer left in 1988, we asked him to come for an audition but we were after something really specific, so to break it gently to him we asked him to come and be our roadie, but he became more or less the sixth member of the band. But then he joined up with his brother and formed Oasis."
South Wales Echo, David Owens interview with Tom Hingley: ‘Music journalists and music journalism in general has been quite lazy about that period of time,’ he tells me, explaining his reasons for writing the book. ‘They had forgotten that we were one of the three biggest bands between 1989 and 1992. ‘They kind of think we’re famous purely because Noel Gallagher worked for us (Gallagher was the band’s roadie before finding fame with Oasis); the truth is Noel Gallagher would never have been heard of and had no career whatsoever if he had not worked for us. ‘No-one forced him to stand at the side of the stage for 250 gigs and watch me sing, no one made him be in the studio where we wrote songs and told someone how to play them. When we did interviews abroad and we were tired Noel would sit in and pretend to be me or Clint (Boon – The Inspiral Carpets’ keyboard player). It was a rock school for him. ‘He met Alan McGee working for us, Paul Weller working for us, he met The La’s working for us. People don’t get that because Oasis were a million times more successful, but I’m sorry the chronology of it was that he couldn’t have worked for The Stone Roses because their egos were too big to accommodate him, he couldn’t have worked for The Happy Mondays because at least a couple of them were really serious Class A drug users, so he would not have gone anywhere if he had not worked for us. ‘He owes an enormous debt to the band and that’s fine because he went off and did something much better and much more successful than we did,’ he adds, letting out a huge roar of laughter.
31 August 2012 - Tom speaks to Tim Fletcher of Burton Mail : ...Hingley claims Gallagher was kicked out of the band’s entourage after smashing up their tourbus, and says he was deliberately kept in the dark about the fact the future Oasis mainman had auditioned for the job.
“The rest of the band didn’t tell me,” he says. “Why? Maybe some of them were a bit manipulative and maybe they thought Noel was a good person to have around.
“Maybe they thought they could draft him in at some point to replace me. Bands are quite Machiavellian things — they’re not the Chelsea flower show — but in any event Noel learned to be a pop star working for us.”...
January 1989 - John Matthews audtions for the band.
Notes: John would later sing for The High, formed by ex-Stone Roses guitarist Andy Couzens.
From August 2011 - MOJO Magazine interview with Tom Hingley: ...Stephen had left, and they were auditioning for a new singer. Clint (Boon, organ) had a go, and so did (then-roadie) Noel Gallagher and John Matthews [later of The High). They weren't right....
January 1989 - Steve Harrison advised Tim Burgess to audition for Inspiral Carpets
Notes: Apparently Omega Records owner & The Charlatans manager Steve advised Tim to audition for the band. Tim would later join The Charlatans, when their original singer Baz left.
January 1989 - Too Much Texas singer Tom Hingley audtions for the band
Notes: From 1990 Smash Hits Magazine Interview by Sylvia Patterson:
"I knew all them, anyway, whispers Tom, "so they got me up on stage at Manchester Apollo for an audition."
What did you Sing? "Had to do a Johnny Cash number," he recalls, rumbling into a rendition of the great man's classic... "Waaalk walk Straight...
Clint: "And we'd heard him doing a Peel session with this other band he was in — they did a version of 'Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep' (truly irritating hit from the "happening" '70s)
From August 2011 - MOJO Magazine interview with Tom Hingley: HELLO GOODBYE - THIS MONTH:TOM HINGLEY AND INSPIRAL CARPETS. They began playing garage in a lock-up; later came the fateful gathering in a hotel meeting room.
HELLO MARCH 1989 I'd been in a band called Too Much Texas and I'd met Paula Greenwood, who ran the Playtime label in Manchester. She took us under her wing and let us support the Inspirals at two Or three gigs. They were a powerful band when Stephen Holt sang for them in those early days. Stephen had left, and they were auditioning for a new singer. Clint (Boon, organ) had a go, and so did (then-roadie) Noel Gallagher and John Matthews [later of The High). They weren't right. So I went to a rehearsal room called the Mill in Guide Bridge near Ashton. It was Clint's lock-up; he used to make furniture and it was quite industrial, with lots Of heavy machinery. They used to spray paint these bedspreads, so there were all these particles in the air. They'd insulated this little room and I remember leaning against this wall which had
sacking sewn into it. I would have sung the stuff they'd done with Stephen: Butterfly, Keep The Circle Around, Joe. They were all there, Craig [Gill, drums), Clint, Graham (Lambert, guitarl and Martyn (Walsh, bass). They were into The Seeds. The 13th Floor Elevators and The Chocolate Watch Band, and Craig was equally into hip-hop and pop music. There's always a pecking order in bands, and probably it was really Graham's band. They were very northern and more working-class than me. I'm a southerner and a bit more posh. But I'd been in bands for years So I knee.' what I was doing, plus I had a car. They didn't tell me I was in, but we were rehearsing and gigs were booked very quickly because the band hadn't been able to play for three, four
months. We committed to spending £500 to record a single, too: when I started doing a vocal, Graham and Clint came in and said, "What's that? You've got a lisp." I said, "It's too late, I'm in the band now." I got the piss taken out of me for the first six months for drinking mineral water, until they started putting weight on drinking fizzy drinks. But we were united by music, then.

From August 2011 - MOJO Magazine interview with Tom Hingley: ...We committed to spending £500 to record a single, too: when I started doing a vocal, Graham and Clint came in and said, "What's that? You've got a lisp." I said, "It's too late, I'm in the band now."...

From April 1999 - Tom Hingley sleeve notes for The Radio 1 Sessions: Recording sessions for the BBC was always challenging and fun. I have great memories of all the Maida Vale studio sessions recorded for John Peel and Mark Goodier...There was something magical and unique about driving down to London in a van, arriving at the Maida Vale studios (which were originally a roller- skating rink) and within iust a few hours thrashing out as many as four songs. These were always special, exclusive to the show and often very different from the album and single recordings...

Notes: 'Trainsurfing' was originally scheduled for September 1988 on Playtime, when their distributors Red Rhino collapsed.
Playtime delayed the release (November 1988, December 1988) and set the date for January 1989 after securing a new distribution deal with Pinnacle. The band were frustrated with the label, hence forming their own Cow Records label and having complete control of their records. When the band left Playtime Records they took the initial vinyl pressings with them and had all the matrix's scratched out on the initial pressings for release on Cow. Years later (see April 1992) the band would be taken to court over the early departure. The high court writ served by Paula Greenwood, to the band, revolves around a verbal agreement regarding the records release. Playtime argued in court they had an exclusive license to the tracks.
Check out 1988 for a white label promo of Butterfly. The E.P. would finally see all the tracks available, digitally for the first time, on the 2003 Cool As boxset.
From 1990 Smash Hits Magazine Interview by Sylvia Patterson:
Regarding the bands signature cow drawing, Clint said: "It wasn't really a big idea as such," he muses. "Put up the image on our backdrop and people started mooin' and laughin' an'... drinkin' milk, and so we just took it from there..really started from this time we were all in a backyard eatin' beefburgers," chips in bald bass player Martin, who's known as Bungle he looks like Bungle Of Rainbow,
and this COW came up and started watching us.. so we gave it a bit of beefburger!"
That's not very nice. "Naaah, it's just.. .irony! And, besides, it means we'll be sacred if we ever go to India."
And you still eat them, eh? Martin:'Oh yeah. Well, if you didn't eat them be walkin' all over the motorways, wouldn't they?"

Notes: I used to own the original Dung 4 cassette before the Cherry Red Records re-issue. This is a brilliant cassette, I still feel that a lot of tracks are superior to the released E.P versions. It should have been the bands first album. Although some of the songs were re-recorded and released officially, 26 is still unique to this release. The version of Joe was made available a year before on the various artists compilation 'Manchester North Of England'. Inside My Head & Sun Don't Shine would not be officially released until Stephen leaves the band and Tom Hingley joins, the tracks appear on Life. Seeds Of Doubt would also be re-recorded with Tom for This Is How It Feels B-Side.

'Yeah, right, we'll make you like caricatures of yourselves — we'll

Graham: "And it's just not true! at him sat there! Wide awake!"

From 20 January 2018 Clint Boon Interview for the Winsford Guardian by Stephen Topping: He remembers how little known the band was when he penned This is How It Feels, a song which has gone on to be sung on football terraces and still be played regularly on the radio. Clint said: “I think it’s lovely. I didn’t realise back then how big it would be. At that time we were still taking time off work to do gigs. “If I knew then that it would still be played 30 years later, that it would be sung at so many football games, and that people would really embrace it, I would have been very surprised. “It’s like a child that you have brought up, and they are now an adult doing their own thing. We created it but it is completely out of our control now.”

Notes: Possibly debut performances for Real Thing & Besides Me. This Is How It Feels & She Comes In The Fall are similar to the John Peel Session versions, see 17 August 1989. Show can be found on the 'Mad Cow' Vinyl Bootleg. For years I thought the bootleg was recorded at Blackpool 1989, there was even a bootleg sleeve with the incorect date & photos of Blackpool. The bootlegger(s) must have been confused with The Stone Roses show. The actual 'Blackpool' recording dominates playback only through the left channel.

Notes: Sold Out Show. NME reported that bootleggers were handing out leaflets at the end of the show advertising a bootleg recording for sale, the same happened after an Edwyn Collins show at Town & Country in London 1989 too. The tapes were priced at £3.50. At the time there was several raids on Camden Market regarding the sale of bootleg cassettes. Apparently an Inspiral Carpets spokesman told the NME 'We're going to put out our own digital recording, much better quality, to thwart them'. Date taken from Moosletter Three.

The deal was a UK only 5 LP deal, they had not settled on a Europe or U.S. deal at the time. Mute & A&R recruits scouted the band at the French show in November 1989. Notes: The single reached number 14 in the U.K. Charts. Originally scheduled for an April release, the single was brought forward by Mute so the bands April Tour would promote the Life LP instead. The Robbery & Drum mixes were scheduled to be remixed by fellow label signings 'Renegade Soundwave'. I read that the multi-tracks were not available in time for them to remix and the mixes here were produced by in-house Mute Engineers (hence the sleeve credit).
The singles compilation noted the release date as '07 May 1989'.

March 1990 - Cool As Milk Advertisement campaign
Notes: The band had the ingenius idea of advertising on milk bottles. They made a deal with North West Milk Marketing company to advertise on 250,000 bottles of milk. The deal lasted approx 16 weeks, starting just before the release of Life (23 April 1990). The distribution was restricted to the North West, mainly in and around Manchester.
So many bottles were stolen and have now become collectible items. The bottle had the cow logo wearing shades and the black, life album, band siloutees on the rear and read ''Cool As Milk - moo! Inspiral Carpets. ''life'' : album , cassette , cd : out now + live concert at g-mex 21st july 1990. please rinse and return. Lancashire Dairies Manchester.

Notes: Reached number 2 in the charts.
Sackville is sometimes noted as the 7inch version. Both Sackville & She Comes In The Fall are different mixes from the She Comes In The Fall single release. This Is How It Feels is a different mix from the single version, which most people know. Over the years the band would play This Is How It Feels like the single version, rather than the LP one. The album would see a deluxe re-issue in April 2013.

1990 - The Hilton Hotel, Leeds
Notes: Sylvia Patterson interviews the band for Smash Hits Magazine.
From 1990 Smash Hits Magazine Interview by Sylvia Patterson:
They've all done millions of crap jobs, too. "OOOh, we've done them crap jobs!" wails Graham, guitar player with the curls and the liveliest person you ever did meet.
"I've been a journalist! Heheh. Yeah, wowe drove around in Crap vans delivering things, worked in record shops, petrol stations, cotton mills.. .been a managin' director. .a gynaecologist. and Craig used to be a car valet — he knows about cars."
Compared to the likes of the Mondays and the Roses, the Carpets are complete big girls' blouses. They all stayed In their hotel last night, no one was sick out of the fifth floor window and Clint stayed up till 4 o'clock this morning fixing his organ which flaked out at last night's "gig".

Talking With The Beast CD: Interview 33:42
Notes: The band's second LP reached number 5 in the U.K. Charts.
From 02 September 2011 - John Robb Louder Than War interview: Graham: ”The second album rebelled against the first album- Steve had been around for about half the songs on the first album. The second album was a complete contrast to the first album. The third album should have been second and second should have been third. Clint ‘The Second album should have been a free giveaway with forth one (everyone laughs).
31 August 2012 - Tom speaks to Tim Fletcher of Burton Mail : “It’s often the case that the second album doesn’t do as well as the first but we’ve carried this cultural cringe around about this album for the last 21 years, it’s never been revisited and it’s greatly loved and missed,” he says. “We were a great singles band but that was our only great, coherent album.”
