07 August 2001 - Music Of The Spheres Listening Party, Garden Party, Regent's Park, London
Notes: Approximately 100 guests, including nme.com, were invited to a specially constructed marquee in Regent's Park to be the first to hear the record.
In addition to the album playback, those present were offered a smoke from a giant, 4ft bong. However, the smoke on offer was not marijuana, instead guests were surprised to inhale a sweet, fruit flavoured substance.
One fan who attended the playback told nme.com: "The vibe was really relaxed all evening and it was a lovely way to hear the album for the first time. It's just a shame the bongs weren't real - that would have been a nice touch!"

From 12 September 2005 - The Greatest, Ian Brown said: Track by track... F.E.A.R. - I was sat in a hotel room in NY trying to break down the word 'fear' for my own amusement, trying to come up with as many
anacronyms as possible. I thought rapper kids from NY could come up with thousand, and if I could come up with a hundred I'd be doing well. It was two years later, working on an idea for a track with Dave McCracken that I remembered the lyrics and thought they would go hand in glove with this piece of music that we had. Listening to the orchestra record the track filled me with unparallelled joy - what a beautiful experience recording this song was. Thanks to Cathy Thomson for the lift.

Re-issued as a deluxe twin CD set with Remixes Of The Spheres, 26 July 2005.
See 17 April 2000 Monday for initial reports of writing the LP.
Recorded mostly at Astoria Studios, London (a boat on the Thames owned by Dave Gilmour of Pink Floyd, and one time residence of Charlie Chaplin).
Francis Dunnery, his previous work includes playing on the Grammy Award winning 'Mis-education of Lauren Hill', as well as being invited to play with Carlos Santana.
From July 2001 - Q Magazine, Ian Brown said: "I wanted to make this record in the classic style, if I could. The idea of having ten songs, proper songs, you know? Good lyrics, good melodies. 'Fear' has a similar beat to 'I Wanna Be Adored' and (album track) 'Shadow of A Saint' at the end is kind of like 'I Am The Resurrection', the big build up at the end. It's loosely based on the first Stone Roses LP, but I set out to better it."
From 12 September 2005 - The Greatest, Ian Brown said: Track by track... Whispers - Feeding the swans on the Thames from the boat studio owned by Pink Floyd whilst mixing this track was one of the highlights of recording Music Of The Spheres. The boat that the studio was in used to belong to Charlie Chaplin, and there's a great photo of Laurel and Hardy sitting in the same spot that I sat while mixing the record.
Forever And A Day - Recorded after most of 'Music of The Spheres' was in the bag, this song has been much improved through live performances....
Press sheets, posters, postcards included: "It seemed clear to the Pythagoreans that the distances between the planets would have the same ratios as produced harmonious sounds in a plucked string. To them, the solar system consisted of ten spheres revolvong in circles about a central fire, each sphere giving off a sound the way a projectile gives of a sound as it swished through the air; the closer spheres gave lower tones while the farther moved faster and gave higher pitched sounds. All combined into a beautiful harmony, the music of the spheres."

From March 2002 - I Am Without Shoes (thestoneroses.net) Interview with Andy Watts: IAWS: Did you ever meet any of the other Stone Roses? AW: Just Mani. I know plenty of people who know Ian, I'm going to Shepherd's Bush on Monday to see him. I'd like to meet him. I saw him at the NME Premier shows and Brixton Academy last year, it was good, but on 'Be There' I'm sure he was miming! The vocal EQ was dramatically different to what had gone before. No disrespect to Ian though, perhaps he turned in an impeccable vocal delivery that night.

2002 - Ian Brown lives in Bayswater, London
From 2002 Lindsay Baker Interview with Ian: It's a different world he inhabits now. He lives with his Mexican wife Fabiola and Emilio in affluent Bayswater, and spends weekends in Manchester with Frankie, nine, and Casey, five. He lives in London because that's where Fabiola wants to be. He found it hard at first - up north, he could stand in a bus queue and talk to anyone, but down there he found it hostile. "Before I came here, I thought I was cosmopolitan, but now I think I'm a proper northerner, me." Does he find his wealth difficult to square with this man-of-the-people persona ? He says he doesn't spend money on himself, but on his wife, kids and parents. He's not an acquisitive person, not the type to cut himself off from the world behind electric gates. Still, life must be easier now ? "I live a life that my grandfather could never have dreamt about." But his "proper northerner" status also makes him an "easy target". "People think that I'm bound to be one of those bigoted northern men: a poof's a poof, a spade's a spade and all that. It's easy for them to put that on me because they don't know me." In the past, he has been critical of 1990s "lad culture", something that he contributed to, albeit inadvertently, but he has also said that he used to be "one of those kids who couldn't keep his mouth shut" - which still seems to hold true.
02 February 2002 Saturday - Ian Brown's Manager's Office, Chorley Wood, Hertfordshire caught fire.
Notes: From 05 February 2002 - NME Article: nme.com reports that Ian Brown's UK tour "has been thrown into jeopardy when offices storing his equipment suffered fire damage." It goes on: A spokesperson for the star told NME.COM this morning (February 4) that on Saturday (February 2) the building that holds his manager's office in Chorley Wood, Herts caught fire. Saved from the inferno were a host of musical instruments that would've been destroyed, as well as phones, computer and fax equipment, vital for the tour to be a success. The spokesperson added: "Fortunately the tour can go ahead as planned. Ian's manager saw the fire from his home and went the office and saved everything before it was too late. Some of the adjacent buildings are gutted, but his was just damaged."

From March 2002 - Hot Press Magazine Interview: Although the Roses are only bit part players in it, the 39-year-old will be putting his (king) monkey suit and journeying to London for the 24 Hour Party People premiere. "A lot of people slag Tony Wilson, but I rate him for what he's done. He's a really intelligent guy who, despite having the Cambridge education, stayed in Manchester and made things happen there. "Is he a Manchester hero? No, the Manchester heroes are Dennis Law,George Best,Ryan Giggs...(laughs).The people I remember most fondly from them days are the kids off the street. I was saying to me girl, 'You could make a film of them just talking about their lives'. They've always been more entertaining than the muppets in the magazines." Given his admiration for Tony Wilson, why did the Roses by-pass Factory and sign first to Revolver and then to Silvertone? "Cause they had New Order," he says baldly. "We'd always have been second in the pecking order to them, which is not what you want, is it?" Brown intends adding his ten pennies worth to the Manchester debate next year, when he brings out his own book. "I've music to get out first, but, yeah, I am going to do it. There'll be stuff in it about me upbringing, the Roses and the time I spent in prison. I won't spoil the surprise, except to say there'll be a few revelations made and scores settled!"

22 February 2002 Friday 00:00 - The Guardian Newspaper article, by Dave Simpson: Four out of five stars review. Rock City, Nottingham.
If the Stone Roses had not crumbled beneath him, Ian Brown would never have become a solo artist. Four years ago he was even considering becoming a gardener. That he did not is largely down to his fans. Three idiosyncratic albums later, Brown returns the loyalty. Instead of partying it up at the Brits (where he was nominated for best male solo artist), he is down with his flock. "Brownie is our leader," they cry. Brown responds by telling an appalling joke about an elephant and goads the whole crowd into singing him happy birthday.
There is no other performer like him. As Liam Gallagher's forerunner, he can still outswagger all comers. But it is the other stuff: the mysterious hand gestures aimed at the front row; the waving as if he is on a boat at sea; the mimed riding of a bicycle. Whatever he is doing (and maybe he doesn't know himself) he makes an engrossing spectacle. You would pay to see him even if he wasn't singing. In fact, some would pay to stop him singing.
Brown's voice causes the same arguments between fans and non-believers as the Dylan squawk. He begins badly, bellowing like a foghorn through So Many Soldiers. Maybe Brown would not be able to sing Roses songs even if he wanted to (and he doesn't, despite teasing the crowd by introducing I Am the Resurrection). In any case, his more languid solo material suits his adult voice. The dub influence in his music is underestimated, with his melodically unusual constructions, Ali-shuffling rhythms and "chi-chi" vocal effect rooted in old Jamaica sound systems.
There is a slight lack of pace in this live show, a problem that could be solved by including Can't See Me, his feverish funk workout from 1998. When he does up the tempo it pays off, with a triple whammy of Golden Gaze, Fear and My Star. Brown enjoys the last so much he comes out and sings the whole song again a capella, with just a solitary wrong note.

M - May 2002 - John McCready Interview with Ian Brown over the phone.
Notes: From The Very Best Of 2002 sleeve notes, article by John McCready: ''In May 2002 I put together an article about The Stone Roses. I met John and Mani separately in Manchester and ended up with a few hours of tape. Ian was on tour at the time and generously gave me an hour of his time on the telephone.'' Ian: I can't say I miss it. All I can say is I had it and I loved it and what I do now is a different thing. I'm still working with great lads and they are great players. But The Roses spent five years rehearsing before we even put a record out. That made a difference and I've not had that since.
M - May 2002 - Trafford Today Newspaper
Steve Taylor article. KING OF THE SWINGERS - In 1989 Manchester was the most happening city in the world and Stone Roses singer Ian Brown was the coolest person in Manchester. The city of Madchester and all its music was destroyed in an earthquake in about 1993, but luckily Ian Brown survived. He's released three solo albums since 1997, each true to the funky spirit of his former band. But where did Ian Brown perfect his pop star attitude? Did his parents send him off to New York at the age of 15, to study with John Lennon and Keith Richards? No - it's all the result of growing up on the mean, leafy streets of Timperley, South Trafford. King Monkey grew up on Sylvan Avenue, Timperley, with fellow Stone Rose John Squire as his next door but three neighbour. Brown and Squire went to Altrincham Grammar where they formed The Patrol, a punk band. They played regularly at Sale Annexe Youth Club - just behind Sale Town Hall - and at South Trafford College. In 1983 Ian Brown took another crucial step towards becoming a pop icon; a job at the Sale DHSS office on Dane Road. It may well be that if it wasn't for the Sale DHSS staff the world would know the Stone Roses by a different name. A colleague recalls him coming in with a list of names and asking everybody which one they thought was best. That was when the band became The Stone Roses. After two years, Ian reluctantly resigned from his job, when a two-month tour of Scandinavia and beckoning stardom meant he could no longer give it the attention he felt it deserved. And the rest is pop history. Or is it? My source at the DSS tells me that there are some vacancies for summer jobs coming up. So if you're out there reading this, Ian Brown, and have decided that the life of a pop star isn't what you really wanted after all...By Steve Taylor

27 October 2002 - St Anthony's RC School, Urmston
Notes: Suprise show for 512 school children. Organised by head teacher, former session musician and music journalist, Bill Byford. Unconfirmed if Ian attended the show.
Notes: From 27 October 2002 - manchesteronline.co.uk: Former Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown has chosen an Urmston school hall to recreate the "Madchester" era he made famous. Pupils at St Anthony's RC School were today enjoying the hippest school concert ever. Cult singer Brown sent his own band along to play a set to 512 lucky pupils - and promised, despite other commitments, he would try to make it himself. The Manchester rocker is pals with head teacher Bill Byford, a former session musician and music journalist, who used his contacts to organise a thank-you gig for his pupils after a massive improvement in their GCSE results. Headteacher Bill Byford said "I was the first person to write about the Stone Roses and I knew Ian Brown for years. I asked if they would come along because the results have been fantastic this year."

From I Am Without Shoes fansite 14 October 2002 article: John Leckie has exclusively told this site a bit about what the remastering of 'The Very Best Of The Stone Roses' involved. He said: "The remastering involved Silvertone getting the original half inch master mix tapes out of their library (hadn't been opened since 1989)and with Chris Blair at Abbey Road we re-transfered the recordings to hard disc for CD preparation. "In doing so we adjusted levels between tracks and added equalization (ie treble and bass enhanced) to bring it as close to our intentions as when we cut the vinyl in 89. When mastering for vinyl the levels, eqs and compression is used to get the best sound on vinyl pressings. Often bass is cut as this takes up space in the groove; treble cannot be overused as it distorts easily on peaks and if there is a sudden burst in volume of course the stylus jumps. With CD none of this process is necessary and so its good to get back to the mix tape and the original balance that was decided at the time of completing the album."
From 18 November 2021 - The Gearspace.com Community Interview with producer John Leckie: The tracks on The Very Best Of The Stone Roses where remastered did you have any involvement in that? Did you recently remaster all the tracks that were on the upcoming 20th anniversary CD? As some had already been done for the very best of release did you just cut and paste them? or did you do them all from scratch? Also why was Ian the only Rose to join you? - charlie1
John Leckie: Yes. I remastered The Very Best of The Stone Roses for Silvertone a few years ago. We did my tracks from the original half inch with Chris Blair at Abbey Road who did the original album. Silvertone/Sony/BMG didn't make such a fuss about it the way Sony is now over this new release. We really just went for the original sound and didn't really pump it up too much. On The Very Best Of, there are tracks from Second Coming which was on Geffen/Universal and no matter how hard Dave Wibberley, the project person at Sony/BMG tried to get masters from Universal, the lawyers told him to just go out and buy the CD! Which is what he did and for second album tracks, that's what's used on record as flat transfer....

Notes: Extra date added due to popular demand. Unbias review from https://scruffystorms.com/ " ‘Well his band were good anyway. He was himself an insufferable prat, spitting at the audience and pouring water over particular crowd members, just being generally childish and imbecilic. He nearly got chucked off the stage – as it was the lights came up during his last song, though he sang on regardless"
December 2002, edited 17 January 2003, in General Chat - The Mix Honorary Guru said: Did anyone see the Manics in the CIA on Monday, they ROCKED. Ian Brown was a major dissapointment. What a tosser, spitting at the crowd, throwing bottles, he didn't control his anger very well at all. He got booed off stage (ha ha) ok so someone started throwing stuff at him, but that kinda thing happens. he should have just shrugged it off and carried on proffesionally, but he obviously lacks the intelligence to be able to do that. They ended up having to switch the lights on, power down the sound system and security carted him off stage. What a fool!

From 12 September 2005 - The Greatest, Ian Brown said: Track by track...REIGN - REIGN was a gleat opportunity for me to work with Will Malone, the great string arranger, and to take the work I'd done in the past with UNKLE a stage further. It was at my suggestion that we brought Mani in on bass as I knew he was the perfect bass player to compliment this recording. I was pleased to see George Martin in the canteen of Air Studios where we recorded it. I hope I'm still doing it when I'm his age.
