Clint Boon Interview
Notes:
25 November 2015 From outlineonline.co.uk Outline Norwich Born & Bred webpage, Inspiral Carpets Interview by Lizzoutline 25/11/15: How did you become a Radio DJ?
We did the Inspirals full time for 10 years from 85 to 95 and because we worked at such a high level internationally we were always in front of a microphone being interviewed or performing.
The first person to ask me to do some radio was Janice Long. She was setting up a little station in Liverpool, and she asked me to get involved. Because I wasn’t nervous being in front of a microphone I said I’d do it. It started from there, doing loads of stand-in jobs for people.
In 2003 when the Inspirals got back together I did an interview with Tom Robinson at 6Music and at the end he said you sound really good on the radio, I’m going away in August, do you want to do my show for two weeks? So that was my first serious radio job. Because of that, people in the North started offering me jobs so I was suddenly in demand as a stand in DJ. XFM wanted to start a Manchester station so they came to me and asked me to help build it and present a show. I never set out to be a radio presenter as I didn’t think my voice would work on radio.

Notes: Sold Out Show. The original support band was The Caesars, another organ driven band hailing from Sweden, but they pulled out of the tour and Puressence stepped in to support. I was there with my dad. It felt like something was happening in Manchester at the time, a revival of the 'Madchester' scene. Probably because everyone who lived through it was having a mid-life crisis and wanted to relive their youth. The show was a sell out and had been since the tickets went on sale. This was the days before the smoking ban so the show was already consumed with fog before the support band came on. The sound was loud and proud. Fans held up banners welcoming the band home and everyone was mooing the hits. The big suprise was Happy Mondays star Shaun William Ryder appearing onstage with the band. The crowd went wild. Shaun came on during Commercial Rain and sang along with the band. He threw in new lyrics and even led the band into a medly of 24 Hour Party People. Shaun stayed onstage during This Is How It Feels and questioned the crowd why they were booing him, even though the sound was the carpets signature moo!. A great show. Watch the BBC3 Shaun Ryder documentary for footage from the show too. Apparently the December Tour was recorded for the ConcertLive series but a deal for the releases was never agreed upon. If the show was recorded and released on the night it would have been pressed on 2 CD-R (CD1: (Introduction Tape) to I Want You. CD2: Move to Out Of Time). The third disc would be blank and you could download the rest of the set and burn the downloaded track onto the blank disc yourself, usually 320k MP3 audio was supplied by ConcertLive for the home downloads. The recordings remain unreleased.

Tom Hingley & The Lovers - 09 September 2005 - St. George's Hall, Basement, Blackburn, Lancashire
Commercial Reign / Saturn 5 / Directing Traffic / Online Pharmacy (Tom Hingley & The Lovers) / Find Out Why / She Comes In The Fall - 'Kingsmen, Kingshorses' / Beast Inside / 3145 (Tom Hingley & The Lovers) / Joe / This Is How It Feels / Sackville / Two Worlds Collide / I Want You / Hole (Tom Hingley & The Lovers) / Dragging Me Down / Step On (Happy Mondays cover) / Totally Wired (The Fall)
Notes: Billed as 'Tom Hingley + band play Inspiral Carpets Greatest Hits.'
I was there with my dad. Tom was totally wired but the show was amazing. As an amazing version of Commercial Rain started Tom walked through the crowd and jumped on stage and started to sing. The songs were fast paced. The bass was loud and even the organ sound was sweet too. Tom even started singing a section from Grand Old Duke Of York during the marching section of She Comes In The Fall. They threw in some originals and some suprise covers too. Step On is the John Congos song but the band play the more popular Happy Mondays version. Step On turns into a medley of several songs and lasts almost 8 minutes long. Totally Wired was played as the last song of the night, The Lovers included ex-The Fall members the Hanley brothers. We followed Tom to Middleton and even caught him at a free festival in Blackburn too, sadly a shorter set was played though at the free gig.

Tom Hingley & The Lovers - 16 September 2005 - Civic Centre, Middleton * Support Act(s): The Silent Partners
Commercial Reign / Saturn 5 / Directing Traffic / Online Pharmacy (Tom Hingley & The Lovers) / Find Out Why / She Comes In The Fall / Beast Inside / 3145 (Tom Hingley & The Lovers) / Joe / This Is How It Feels (attempt) / This Is How It Feels / Sackville / Two Worlds Collide / I Want You / Hole (Tom Hingley & The Lovers) / Shall We Take A Trip (Northside) - Dragging Me Down / Step On (Happy Mondays cover)
Notes: Billed as 'Tom Hingley + band play Inspiral Carpets Greatest Hits.' After This Is How It Feels Tomy phones newly wed Clint Boon whilst he's on his honey moon, much to the delight of the audience and shock of his band. Ex-Northside singer Dermo supported with his new band The Silent Partners. Tom acknowledged the band during the set and even sang a few lines of Northside's Shall We Take A Trip before launching into Dragging Me Down. I don't think they played Totally Wired at this show. I was there with my dad. My first and last time at this venue. This was one of the last gigs to take place at the once iconic centre. Good sound, cheap drinks & a good location. There was an appeal to stop the council from withdrawing funds for the venue but it was declined. When the venue announced it’s upcoming closure many local bands flocked to the venue to play. It wasn’t enough and the venue is now gone.

Notes: Tom Hingley acoustic show, joined by Too Much Texas. The first time Tom has performed with the band for nearly 16 years. I was there. This was the relaunch night for the Chorley Social Club. The venue had a few big names pass through including New Order back in the early eighties (when they just formed after the death of Joy Division). The venue was poorly organised. They had regular members turning up who just wanted to drink and found the music an inconvienace. The sound was really poor, the turn out was poor too. A few local journalists left early and the venue was trying to plug The Damned's upcoming appearence more than this launch night. The ceiling was low and the ventilation was bad. You couldn't see or breathe properly for the cigarette smoke. The live venue was short lived and gigs stopped shortly after The Damned's appearence, they redeemed back to a public housem (much to the delight of the older members). The venue was then closed down all together and converted into a gymn. I think they tried to re-open the venue for music but not sure if they succeeded. From bootleg sleeve 'For One Night Only, Tom Hingley with special guests Too Much Texas, who Tom has not been with for 16 years! Includes classic covers, original Hingley songs, TMT tracks and very few Inspiral Carpets as not advertised'.
