On Track / Goodbye To The Broken
Notes: Andy Rourke (former Smith's bassist) comes in to play bass on some of the recordings including On Track & Goodbye To The Broken.
From Uncut Magazine 13 May 2016, Ian Brown March 2006 Interview by Stephen Dalton: Every album so far has been a step forward musically. So what happens next? “I might make a reggae LP. I’ve always said I wouldn’t, as I love reggae too much – I wouldn’t want to mess it up, it wouldn’t be respectful. But I’ve been listening to it for 30 years and it still moves me as much as it always did. The time may be right to make a big shift. When I sing for my own amusement, I sing good, I sing in a different voice. I want to try and write songs in that voice.”

encore: I Am The Resurrection (with Mani, Peter Hook, Andy Rourke, Paul Ryder & Cressa)
Notes: Charity benefit concert, Noel Gallagher headlined the show and Ian was second on the bill. Andy Rourke, former Smiths bass player, joins Ian for two tracks. It looks like this was the debut performances for On Track, Goodbye To The Broken and Ian's solo version of I Am The Resurrection. Andy would play bass in the studio too for the album recordings. Comedian's Alan Carr & Johnny Vegas introduced the all-star encore band. Freebass joined Ian Brown. Freebass an abbrievted play on the words 'Three Bass Players' consisted of Mani, Peter Hook & Andy Rourke. Happy Mondays bass player Paul Ryder joined the band on bass too and even Cressa made an onstage appearence. I was there. The whole night was brilliant Paul Weller joined The Charlatans for a cover of Town Called Malice, Bernard Butler & David McAlmont were joined by Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce for a string of Smith covers, Echo & The Bunnymen played with Peter Hook and former Oasis guitarist Bonehead's band Electric Milk Band played too. Noel headlined the show with an unplugged set which featured Paul Weller guesting on a couple of songs including a cover of The Jam's - Butterfly Collector.
Ian met and chatted with Timperley legend Frank Sidebottom backstage. Frank was seen onstage brushing the stage inbetween acts on the night. Comedian John Thompson was also at the show and introduced acts on the night.
From 1998 - Top Of The Pops Q&A Session, Ian Brown said: johanna asks: "Do you have a favorite line from all your songs?" Ian Brown: "'I am the resurrection and I am the life, I couldn't ever bring myself to hate you as I'd like.'"
? From 01 February 2009 Sunday - The Guardian, article by Luke Bainbridge: What is your favourite United memory? The Champions League final in 1999. I had a gig in Belfast that night, which is a big United city, obviously. We watched it before we went on stage and we thought it was all over. Then Teddy scored, one all, then Ole put that one in, that was it. All over. Best United game ever.
Did you say anything when you went on stage? I think I sang, "Number one is Georgie Best, number two is Georgie Best, number three..." which I also did at the Manchester v Cancer show, the day of Georgie's funeral. I came on singing, "Number one is Georgie Best" and the crowd were going absolutely crazy, half of them booing because they were Blues. Gary Neville was there so I said, "Let's have a great big hand for Gary Neville" and half the crowd booed. I apologised last time I saw him and he said, "No mate, forget it. I'm well used to that by now."

John Squire - 04-29 July 2007 - John Squire: 'New Work' Exhibition - Smithfield Gallery, 16 West Smithfield Street, London, EC1A 9HY
Notes: From 02 July 2007 Monday - The Guardian article, John Squire said: ...Much has been written on the relationship between art and pop. I have heard it said that if you want to form a band, you should go to art school - but I never felt compelled to go down this route. Soulless formal instruction seems at odds with what I see as a very personal and intense activity. For me, art is as much a part of my music as the lyrics and the tunes; it is all about the creative drive. To will something into being, to be the first to see or hear it. As with other artists who work in this way, the KLF's Bill Drummond or Brian Eno for example, the flow between the art studio and the music studio has been an easy one. I spend up to 10 hours a day, seven days a week in the studio, which has become the centre of my universe. I have worked on developing my own voice in the painting, which focuses on an increasing tension between background and foreground. The recent additions of sand and wax to my work have exaggerated the battle for prominence, transparent wax competing with the opaqueness of the oils and sand-based layers. I have also added an industrial sandblasting unit to the equation, using it to eat away at inch-thick glass panels, and any living thing that dares approach. I was asked recently whether I felt vulnerable exhibiting my art. The truth is I can't wait to see it all hanging in one room, sell it out and start work on the next show.
From 13 June 2007 - XFM Manchester Session Interview: As John was telling us before we heard the Beach Boys, he’s embarked on his art, pretty much full time. What are you currently working on John?
JS: A huge painting for the exhibition in July down in the Smithfield Gallery [London, opens July 4th 2007].
How big, a big canvas? JS: You need a ladder; that big.
And it’s propped up against a wall somewhere? JS: Yeah, I’m going straight back to that
For people who haven’t seen examples of your work…JS: And there’s a lot of them!
How would you describe the paintings you’re working on now? They’re large… JS: Not exclusively, no. I’m doing some 10 by 8 inch stuff as well. I work backwards; I paint a full canvas and then I proceed to bury it with sand, glue, and more paint to hide most of the original image and reveal the areas that I choose to. It’s quite an elaborate layering process.
Is there any particular colour that predominates? JS: No.
It’s abstract work, but I know you’ve done a portrait of John Lydon, for example, so is that something you’ve left behind that portrait work in favour of this abstract, multi-layering thing? JS: Yeah, I think that was a bit of blind alley really.
That was a bit of a one-off? JS: Yeah....
Have you any intention of bringing the music and the art together? I know that Marshall’s House – your second solo album – was influenced by the work of the artist Edward Hopper, but I wondered whether you’d maybe thought of bringing out a book with your work in it and a CD with it, say, or making a specially commissioned piece of music to play in the gallery, or bringing the music and the art together in any other way?
JS: I am working on a sound installation but it’ll be fairly hard to dance to!
And that’ll be part of the exhibition? JS: Yeah.
Is that going to be finished for the 4th July? JS: Yeah.
John Squire - 06 September 2007 - 04 October 2007 - John Squire: New Work Exhibition - Dazed and Confused Gallery, 112 - 116 Old Street, London, EC1V 9BG * Doors Open: Monday - Friday, 10:00-18:00pm
Notes: Squire exhibited in London, Tokyo and Edinburgh too.
John Squire said: I’ve felt the need to create for as long as I can remember. That desire for an intense, obsessive relationship with a piece of work as its willed into being. We built a studio a couple of years ago (thanks Mark, Tom, Josh, Lee, Paul and Ryan). The floor, walls, roof, stairs, skylights, windows, electrics everything. This room has become the center of my universe, an inspirational place....Twenty years on I’m still painting, learning and finding new ways to create. With this latest collection I partially bury the paintings under layers of sand, glue and wax and repaint the surface. The first layer then channels through the subsequent ones dividing the surface and revealing fragments of the original brushwork. This process evolved from a series of works in oil and plaster, most of which ended up in a skip. Embedding duct and insulation tape in plaster on canvas and pulling the tape back through the partially dried plaster exposed areas I could work into with the brush. The results were alright but too rigid and I wanted to be able to paint more freely in the channels. As the work has progressed the background and foreground have become more interchangeable. The pathways in the surface texture can describe forms and also serve as a backdrop to the islands and peninsulas crossing above. Recent experiments with glass and splintered wood are filling the studio rapidly forcing the work outside. Time to expand.

From This Is The Daybreak website - May 2008 Simon Hale described his approach to the The World Is Yours LP: "I worked on 11 songs and added the string, horn, harp and timpani parts on top of what was in existence at the time, whether finished or not. We then recorded the orchestra at Angel studios on two separate occasions as an overdub on top of the track. I would tend to take the same initial approach for each song - listening to how the song is put together, what elements it comprises of; melodic themes, rhythmic hooks, harmonic progression, tempo, groove, overall colour of sound etc, and then build my ideas around that to try to highlight what's going on, add another dimension and twist and give variation in my writing as the song progresses. Having the orchestra-only mixes means that you can hear everything in complete isolation away from the track so that it's really obvious what's gone on at the orchestra sessions." (Simon Hale speaking to This Is The Daybreak, May 2008)
The Monkey king said “I know everyone always says their latest is their best, but I really feel that this time. I’ve really gone all out with the lyrics and melodies. I’m trying to make my own “What’s Going On”. It’s going to be something really beautiful, with violins, dead sharp beats, socially conscious lyrics – this time around, I’m trying to bury everything I’ve ever done.”

Notes: Peter Doherty, lead singer, guitarist and writer of Babyshambles, used the lyrics 'I only ever wanted the one with the flag but all you ever wanted was a sixty dollar bag and a cheap limousine for your deep pile dreams on the highway'. As a result, Ian Brown has songwriting credits on the track "French Dog Blues". Babyshambles used the lyrics before the track was officially recorded and quite often performed the track live too. There was a promo video produced and released but the song was never released as a single, although it was scheduled. Notes: Ian Brown and Johnny Marr spoke to the media and gave full support to Radiohead’s radical way of releasing their album ‘In Rainbows.’ Radiohead gave their fans the opportunity to download their new album ‘In Rainbows’ for any amount they want – free, one penny or even £100.
Johnny Marr told the BBC: "I think it's a really fantastic idea because it puts the responsibility back on people's own consciences and deals with people as grown ups." "It's not hiding behind any corporate nonsense, it's just saying 'this is the way it is, let's get on with it'. "Everyone knows you can get your music for free, so let's see if you really want to show the band your appreciation."
Referring to The Charlatans’ plans to give away their album for totally free, Ian Brown said: “I've heard about bands putting out free albums. The idea of that is that they'll then sell concert tickets and that's how they'll get the money back. Anything that's going to break the game up like that, I support it."

I Wanna Be Adored / My Star / Street Children I Am the Resurrection.
From 25 October 2007 Thursday 09:14 - The Guardian Newspaper article, by Alexis Petridis: Three out of five stars review, Guildhall, Southampton.
Detractors would suggest that Ian Brown's ongoing career is one of the great mysteries of modern rock. Audibly the one weak link in a band of startling talents, he has somehow ended up the solitary Stone Rose with a career that's not merely functioning, but in rude health: a decade after their miserable demise, he is still playing sold-out gigs.
Tonight's audience is old enough to recall the brief, dizzying period in which Brown fronted the most exciting band in the world and, as their tendency to erupt into terrace chanting between songs suggests, heavy on the kind of devotee who has more in common with a die-hard football supporter than your standard flighty rock fan. Nevertheless, you wonder how many of them would be here were it not for Brown's pragmatic volte face regarding performing Stone Roses songs: tonight's set is bookended by I Wanna Be Adored and I Am the Resurrection.
However, if your only motivation was to hear Stone Roses songs performed live, you would be better off with one of the many tribute bands. The line that Ian Brown cannot sing has been repeated so often that it feels very tired, but the degree to which he cannot sing still has the capacity to shake you awake. Here, his voice is a muffled, gloomy honk, like a despondent goose wearing a balaclava. It has an inexplicably ominous quality, which does for even the perkiest tracks from his solo career. This is a shame. On record, his songs have an artless charm - whatever accusations you want to level at him, you could never call My Star or Street Children contrived. But live, everything seems to descend into mid-tempo sludge.
For all that, watching him is still weirdly entertaining. Despite the legions of northern frontmen who have copied his swagger, Brown remains a unique and defiantly odd figure, as evidenced by his between-song banter. He engages in a perplexing but determined effort to upset the audience by repeatedly asking if there is anyone here from Portsmouth, the town's arch football rivals. Then he complains that they are not dancing properly: "More shoulder shuffling," he protests, offering a quick demonstration. Then he starts going on about Portsmouth again: cue boos and expletive-laden catcalls of a quite remarkable vehemence. Up on stage, Ian Brown appears to be chuckling to himself: one of the great mysteries of modern rock, as unfathomable as ever.

From 31 May 2008 Saturday 00:50 The Guardian Newspaper article, by Tim Jonze:...I saw them in November at Manchester Arena. Four piece, no effects, no backing tapes, no fancy lights, just them and the songs, dead straight, dead tight. They had a hunger ... they didn't seem like fat old men coining it in, they seemed like fat old men who were hungry!.

Ian Brown becomes godfather to Wilson Aspden
Notes: Gary Aspden, designer and curator of Adidas Originals x Special, asks Ian to be his son's god parent.
"He never forgets presents for my son’s birthday or Christmas either.
When Wilson was a baby I remember Ian once picking him up and singing Elizabeth My Dear to him."
Aspden describes his friend as self-educated, smart, funny (“he
lives for belly laughs") and very shrewd.
“Ian can be an affable person but he definitely doesn't suffer fools. He's tee total and likes to be around the water drinkers and clean—1iving people. A righteous man, not a hedonist. And I’ve seen first—hand that he’s unaffected by the adulation he gets. When the Roses first took off he didn't like to give autographs as he felt he was no better and no worse than his audience. But there is a lot of love out there for Ian and you can never underestimate that love.
Johnny Marr once said to me, ‘Have you ever noticed how when you spend 20 minutes with Ian Brown, you always come away feeling good about things?‘ Maybe that’s what Geno Washington saw in him at that party in Manchester all those years ago.

2008 - Paul McAuley releases 'The Stone Roses - A Documentary' on Youtube.

January 2008 - Ian Brown attends Manchester United Football Club, Old Trafford.
Notes: 2007-2008 Season Ticket holder in one of the boxes on the East stand. The club played This Is The One before the game would start for several years.
From 01 February 2009 Sunday - The Guardian, article by Luke Bainbridge: How did you feel when they started playing This is the One at Old Trafford? I wrote that tune in 1986 when I was on the dole, and there was no way I could have known that 20 years later United would be coming on to the pitch to it. It still gets me every time. It's an amazing feeling. I've got three season tickets now in the East Stand, the old K Stand, with my two oldest sons, and they buzz off it. I laugh and say, "Well, the PRS [Performing Rights Society] is probably paying for the tickets." How often do you get to Old Trafford? I'm there every home game, I only missed two last season. I take my lads to City away to show them what they think of us, and we stand there for an hour and a half just getting abused. Do you get much reaction from other fans? I get nothing but love at United. When I first got the season tickets it was pretty hectic at half-time, everyone wanted my autograph, but everyone generally leaves me alone now.'' What's your favourite United song? "He plays on the left, he plays on the right, that boy Ronaldo makes England look shite ." That's what I love about United: we're the Republic of Mancunia, no one gives a fuck about England. My next favourite would be "You can stick yer fucking England up yer arse", which we sing to Chelsea and the London clubs. I love that. When we sing "Argentina " when Tevez comes on, you see the away fans with open mouths. What other club in England would sing "Argentina"? Nobody. I love that. There have been a few banners at Old Trafford quoting your lyrics. There's "Sent to me from Heaven, you are my world", lyrics from Sally Cinnamon with Cantona, Best, Bryan Robson and Bobby Charlton on it. Then "For Every Manc a Religion", which is from F.E.A.R., and then "One Love", which is getting cleaned but is going back up soon. It amazes me. Did they contact you beforehand? No, they just put them up. I know the lad, Tufty, who does them now. When he put "For Every Manc a Religion" up, I couldn't believe it. It's my club, my city, then there's my flippin' lyrics up there. Then This Is The One comes on and it's, like, "Wow... couldn't have written that." Where did you watch Moscow? I watched it on TV, kickin' myself. It was my eldest lad's GCSEs the next day and I told him he couldn't go to Moscow. My mate at Adidas sorted me out with the trip of a lifetime, going on a private jet, but I felt a bit tight on the kids so I didn't go. The day of the match the kids were going, "You should be there, dad." As soon as we kicked off I thought, "Why aren't I there? I should be there." I had a feeling we were going to win it straight from the off.
From Brian McClair's podcast, Life With Brian, Mani said: "Everytime the team comes out, they come out to 'This is the One' and I always think 'there's another 37-and-a-half pence going into Squire and Brown's pocket.”

Carbon Monoxide (2007) (Encaustic, wool and silk on canvas, 20 x 16 inches)
Wrist (2007) (Encaustic and wool on hessian, 30 x 40 inches)
Notes: John Squire returns with an exhibition of new paintings and mixed media works.
From promo digital flyer: ''Building on a prolific year’s work and two high profile exhibitions in 2007, John Squire’s collection of new art works for the Signal Gallery this Spring, illustrate his continuing desire to develop and experiment with a set of recurring mixed media motifs, whilst further pushing the boundaries of his current visual practise, and more confidently exploring the textures and layers which his canvases bring to life. Squire’s latest bold paintings move into the realm of collage, layering pieces of fabric and patterned paper, which interweave with thick splashes of scratched, layered wax, against a backdrop of hessian canvas. Squire integrates used, traditional garment fabrics as symbols of Englishness, which underlies this new collection of works, these classic fabrics also being authentic symbols of fashion, which have been re-appropriated through the ages by different movements and outlets, and reflect a homegrown identity, which Squire acknowledges. The use of these second-hand materials also creates a visceral connection between the work and the original wearer. Following on from his recent exhibition at Dazed & Confused Gallery, where he first began to work hessian and rougher, more natural tones and textures into his painting, these new works offer more sophisticated, sharp plays of colour and intricate layering, which often mirror the patterns, lines and ripples of the natural world. Squire is in this way a rather quintessentially English painter, his paintings suggesting landscape forms, which move between the rural and the urban. An organic mapping of rivulets and pathways in works such as Wrist and Carbon Monoxide, sit in contrast to other canvases, which offer more energetic, vibrant colours and dramatic lines, and a more urban feeling of chaos...''
09 March 2008 Sunday - Playground Weekend Festival, Sydney, Australia
11 March 2008 Tuesday - Hi Fi Bar, Melbourne, Australia
12 March 2008 Wednesday - The Governor, Hindmarsh, Adelaide, Australia
(incomplete set) "The Godfather" / I Wanna Be Adored / Sweet Fantastic / Sister Rose /
encore: Waterfall / Made Of Stone / FEAR
Notes: Tom Gilhespy review: There’s one big question: who the hell is going to turn up? It’s not that Ian Brown is completely unknown in Australia – though his solo career hasn’t taken off in the Antipodes, you can find his albums, if you know where to look and have the patience – nor that The Gov is a huge venue. It’s just that Brown’s profile, such as it is, has been getting steadily lower ever since the glory days of The Stone Roses. And because it’s Festival season, Adelaide is frantic. If there’s an empty building or room anywhere in the city, there are probably three competing all-juggling avant garde comedy dance troupes trying to convert it into a Fringe venue – pause for breath – so they can perform a light-hearted deconstruction of the complete works of the Marquis de Sade while wearing nothing but home-made lampshades.
Ian Brown The answer comes outside the venue. It’s disguised as another question, and delivered in a cockney accent. “Anyone need tickets?” Of course! Suddenly it all clicks into place. There’s a bloke in a Celtic shirt in the queue, and there’s a Geordie geezer just behind him. The place is crawling with tourists and ex-pats.
The atmosphere inside – once the support band finishes, at any rate – is somewhere on the far side of scarcely credible and rapidly going ballistic to the nth. Yet another question is heavy on the air: “Can you believe it?” And no one can. The Aussies can’t believe that there’s this much fuss about an act they’re only mildly curious about, and the Brits can’t believe that they’re seeing Ian Brown in the back room of a pub. The girl from Shropshire puts it into context: “Last time I saw Ian Brown, it was in a venue that held 4,000.” They might have paid in full, but you’d think all the Brits have woken up and gone to A-list heaven, where you get invited to impossibly cool gigs that no one else gets to hear about until they’re in the music press, days or weeks later.
Bass player Tim Hutton appears with a trumpet, and plays some of the incidental music from The Godfather; once the band have assembled they launch straight into ‘I Wanna Be Adored’. At which point, of course, the atmosphere goes intercontinental ballistic to the nth squared and then some. People are excited. Really excited. So long as they’re British, that is. The Aussies are still a bit relaxed about it all, though the mood is fairly infectious.
Ian Brown. Given the atmosphere, the gig doesn’t need to be much good at all. But it is. Brown’s singing is pretty much as every other report suggests – roll on the day when someone works out how to fit his microphone with an AutoTune plug-in – but as a frontman he takes some beating. He has charisma down pat, and he’s delighted to receive all the energy that the audience are throwing towards him. He channels the excitement perfectly, and does it without any of that namby pamby hand wringing that some artists affect. He’s forgiving, too. A particularly enthusiastic young Brit undoes Brown’s shoelaces (accidentally, it seems, while she’s worshipping at his feet). When she spends the next few songs fretting about her misbehaviour, he ends up giving her what’s left of his beer to cheer her up again. Grin, disappearing cat from a small county not too far from Manchester, do the rest yourself.
Brown’s solo material proves to be surprisingly good. It doesn’t really approach the lofty heights that his previous mob scaled, but it’s certainly good enough to fill out the hour-long stretch between Stone Roses songs. There are some genuine highlights, too: the melancholy 'Sweet Fantastic', from Solarized, and the more recent 'Sister Rose'. Sadly, though, he hasn’t brought Paul Cook and Steve Jones along to play it with him.
Things have calmed down just a little during the course of the evening, but the first two numbers of the encore, ‘Waterfall’ and ‘Made Of Stone’, soon bring the excitement back. The final number, ‘FEAR’, is something of a slow burn, and though Brown’s voice is ragged by now, the song itself is another highlight and easily good enough to close the set without dampening the mood.
All that’s needed to end the evening is a terrace-style sing-along from the Brits, who oblige. The Aussies might be a little bemused by that and the rest of the night’s events, but everyone goes home happy. You’ve probably received a text to that effect already.

You've got a captive audience, right? Are festivals getting too corporate?
They're pretty corporate, because the liquor companies sponsor them. They've got everything - sports, music events, a pub on every corner. I don't like to play anywhere with a banner for Carlsberg or vodka or whatever. I'm not a drinker myself and I don't like feeling like I'm working for the liquor companies. But sometimes you've got to eat it, otherwise you'd never play anywhere.

M - 2009 - From ClashMusic Magazine/Website: The Stone Roses: Tim Burgess Interview By The Charlatans' frontman Tim Burgess
As part of the 20 year celebration of The Stone Roses' debut album in April 2009. Clash Magazine spoke Tim Burgess of The Charlatans on the impact the band had on him and his band.
"I was working in a chemical factory in Northwich when the Roses’ career kicked off. I was in a band at the time called The Electric Train Set - we were doing things like Iggy Pop covers. The Charlatans were already called The Charlatans and were hoping to do some dates with The Stone Roses. The manager invited me along to see them because he was thinking of asking me to join. Obviously the Roses were genius, but I was more inspired by them later as opposed to straight away. I bought ‘Elephant Stone’ and ‘Made Of Stone’ when they came out, and I thought they were incredible singles. I do remember listening to the album on the way to the Hacienda and knew it had some otherness to it. It wasn’t immediate, but it definitely had something else about it.
It was pretty difficult to avoid pure gold in Manchester at that time - The Happy Mondays and The Stone Roses were all on Top Of The Pops, you know? Everyone was looking at Manchester to throw out the next band. It totally helped me and without a doubt helped The Charlatans too.
It’s true that Ian Brown had a go at me. He was talking about me imitating him, but I always considered him an orangutan and me a chimpanzee. And Liam [Gallagher] as a baby chimp. I definitely took a few moves, but I always thought I was trying to combine Ian Curtis, Jagger and Iggy and throw it all into my own thing. You definitely take influences. I mean Shaun Ryder was a huge influence. I think I’ve got it all going on, and it’s become me really.
Everyone is going to think I’m crazy, but my favourite song from their debut is the backward one, ‘Don’t Stop’. It always has been. It doesn’t go down too well in DJ sets though. For me in 1988 and 1989, it was all about listening to dance music in the clubs and then psychedelic music at people’s houses after. It all combined, and that’s what made it all happen.
When John Squire left, that was bad. When it really is that amazing and then something happens like that, like with Mick Jones leaving The Clash, it really makes the enormity of how big they were, bigger. For them to believe they could carry on without John Squire, or whether they didn’t really believe it or not, for me it makes the first record sound even better. I don’t think they should get back together though. It’s kind of a downer when people get together after such a long time. Motivations are just going to be money based. And the chemistry you had together when you were twenty-nine years old is going to be a lot different when you’re forty-five. But if they want to get back together and they need the money, who am I to judge?
What makes me still love The Stone Roses is that they are not like Coldplay or U2 or on that level. Even though they only made one big record, it still had that mythology that The Clash had, and that doesn’t happen to everyone. It is something we should all treasure. Since they aren’t around anymore, they inspire so many people. They just caught all the imaginations at the exact right time.

2009 - John Leckie and Ian Brown Mixing Session, Metropolis Studios, Chiswick, London
From 2009 Mojo Magazine article by Lois Wilson:
"The first I heard about this, " says former Stone Roses singer Ian Brown, "was when Mr Leckie (John, producer) phoned me up and said, 'What are you doing next week, because I'm remastering The Stone Roses' first album. Do you want to come down?'" Brown and John Leckie, the original album's producer, are in Chiswick' s Metropolis studios where, over the course of three days, they will remaster the Roses' 1989 debut, which kaleidoscopi-cally defined its commodiously-trousered times, and oversee production on a further two discs of B-sides, non-album singles and a set of 16 demos.
These tracks, which were foundin a box in Leckie's loft, include previously unissued Pearl Bastard.
"It's like looking at old school photo-graphs," says Brown. "Really nice. We just watched some films that John had done during the Fools Gold sessions and that really brought back fond memories. We were always laughing and messing about."
"The music reflects the good times we had doing it," says Leckie.
"We always went for the vibe and the feeling, rather than getting it technically correct. There were lots of takes and then suddenly it would all gel. Even now I'm hearing little bits I don't remember from the first time."
"We knew it sounded great," says Brown. "But we never thought people would still be discovering it 20 years on. What set us apart was the groove, Reni's drumming and Mani's bass, that made us different from the other acts at the time, like The Wonderstuff, House Of Love, Wedding Present - they had the rock without the roll.
Along with reliving the groove and the memories, what's thrilled Brown most was the discovery of the demos.
"It's just me and John (Squire, guitarist] on most of them, and the guitar parts are totally different to the finished ones. We did the melodies first. John on an acoustic guitar and then we did the vocal melodies on a plug-in wind organ, so everything just sounded like hymns, like Fight The Good Fight, then we wrote the lyrics together. It was easy, natural."
The brief for the remastering is simple: to make the album sound like the original vinyl release. "We want to retain what the album went for the sounded like: says Leckie. "It will be how it comes straight off the tape. It's never been remastered specifically for CD - it won't sound like previous reissues which were just copies of copies of copies."
Brown and Squire still don't speak after the guitarist bailed in 1996, which must have tarnished the nostalgia. But perhaps not. "When John Leckie phoned me to get involved I thought, maybe I'll get there and everyone [Squire, Mani, Reni] will already be there," says Brown. "If they had have been, we'd have probably all just slotted in, got on with it." Don't hold out for a reunion any time soon though, despite a recent campaign by bassist Mani for one. "A promoter friend offered me a million pounds last week to do it," says the singer. "But not yet. I've still got a lot of work to do first."
2009 - John Squire sends Ian Brown a new demo.
Notes: Apparently the instrumental demo was new and meant to be for Ian to co-write the lyrics and melody. Not neccessarily The Stone Roses reunion but an attempt to rekindle the songwriting partnership they once had.
From The Telegraph, 18 October 2011 13:46pm by Murray Wardrop: Two years ago, Brown said Squire tried to end the feud by writing him a song – but he refused to record it. The singer said he was advised by his children to reject the track – even though he loved it – because Squire quit the Roses. In an interview with The Word magazine, Brown said: "He actually sent me a tune 18 months ago – pretty good, sounded nice, I liked it – but my sons turned round and said, 'dad you can't work on that – he sold you out didn't he? He left you for dead'."

N - July 2009 - Ian Brown vists Mick Jones' Rock N Roll Public Library
Notes: From sofeminine.co.uk 20 July 2009 'Ian Brown's moneymaking kids' by the editorial team: Ian Brown's children make money by selling his autographed posters on the internet. The former Stone Roses frontman - who has a nine-year-old son Emilio, with wife Fabiola Quiroz Brown and two older sons, Frankie and Casey, from a previous relationship - says his three kids have taken advantage of having a famous father.
He explained: "My kids have started selling posters of me on Ebay. They get me to sign them and then sell them online for £10. "It saves me having to give them money!"
Ian recently visited Mick Jones' Rock N Roll Public Library, which showcases the Clash rocker's 30 years of memorabilia, and revealed it has inspired him to gather his own personal collection of musical artefacts. The 46-year-old explained to music website The Quietus: "The exhibition is amazing. It's really great. I should do something similar, I've got loads of Stone Roses stuff at home."
2009 - Citylife Magazine Interview
Notes: Ian revealed two of the songs included on his new album were originally written for Kanye West and Rihanna. “We wrote this song called 'Vanity Kills' but we were a bit late sending it in, so I’ve kept it for the album,” “'Stellify', we wrote for Rihanna, but as we got to the end of writing it I thought, ‘You know what? I’m gonna keep this for myself, we’ll give her another one’,” “She’d have probably sung it better. but it is too good for me not to do it. “And then it was like, ‘Let’s just keep going’, and before we knew it we had half an album in the bag.”

From 18 November 2021 - The Gearspace.com Community Interview with producer John Leckie: The tracks on The Very Best Of The Stone Roses where remastered did you have any involvement in that? Did you recently remaster all the tracks that were on the upcoming 20th anniversary CD? As some had already been done for the very best of release did you just cut and paste them? or did you do them all from scratch? Also why was Ian the only Rose to join you? - charlie1
John Leckie: Yes. I remastered The Very Best of The Stone Roses for Silvertone a few years ago. We did my tracks from the original half inch with Chris Blair at Abbey Road who did the original album. Silvertone/Sony/BMG didn't make such a fuss about it the way Sony is now over this new release. We really just went for the original sound and didn't really pump it up too much. On The Very Best Of, there are tracks from Second Coming which was on Geffen/Universal and no matter how hard Dave Wibberley, the project person at Sony/BMG tried to get masters from Universal, the lawyers told him to just go out and buy the CD! Which is what he did and for second album tracks, that's what's used on record as flat transfer.
On this new release box set all tracks are from Silvertone and all remastered from original half inch 30ips non dolby and done with John Davis at Metropolis over a few days. Of course all the band invited and only Ian called and came down. I spoke to Mani who was out on tour with Primal Scream and they all heard the old demos and extra tracks which are on a box set and they all had test CDs for approval but only Ian responded....
1) In the mastering stage for The Stone Roses 20th was the vinyl mastered directly from the analog tapes or was there a digital intermediate used? If the latter, what was the bit depth and sampling rate of the digital master?
John Leckie: 1. The vinyl was mastered from a digital intermediate. And I think it was just 24bit 48k.
2) Will this CD be "louder" than the original release which is one of the CD's I point to constantly as an example of what the CD format is capable of? If so, was dynamic range compression and clipping avoided? What is your opinion of how loud so many recordings are these days and what teh lesser of two evils is (drc vs. clipping) and what can be done moving forward to get dynamics back in our music?
John Leckie: 2. Yes it will be louder than the original CD but there should be no clipping or compression. It's not mega loud and needn't be. I hate loud CDs and always sound congested. The new Roses 20th I think the main difference is in the low end where we haven't added any, just kept it true to the original.
3) Was any consideration given to a high resolution digital version (Blu-ray, SACD or DVD-Audio) for the Stone Roses 20th release and/or a multi-channel 5.1 mix? I think it's a shame (Pearl Jam - Ten, Beatles Mono/Stereo remasters, The Stone Roses 20th Anniversary, etc.) how often the potential to go beyond the same old boring CD medium is ignored by the major labels. You'd think Sony might have considered an SACD hybrid at least for the album. - Dobyblue
John Leckie: 3. Sony had no interest in a higher quality version of the record and though I pleaded to do a 5.1 mix they couldn't see its commercial potential. Also to do 5.1 mix would cost at least 2-3 weeks in a major studio.

From 06 March 2009 - Uncut Magazine Interview with Ian Brown: And, as far as albums are concerned, would you agree with the NME and the Observer Music Monthly that your first album is the best album of all time? No, I don’t think it’s the best album of all time. I think, out of the UK, it’s one of the best UK albums. I don’t think it touches any Beatles album, I don’t think it touches the Sex Pistols album, first Clash album. Yeah. Well I suppose it’s subjective… It’s a great album. It still sounds fresh. When I hear tracks now it still sounds fresh and I think if it had come out this week it’d have the same impact as it did then. What are your favourite three songs? Um, ‘Don’t Stop’, ‘Made of Stone’ and ‘I Wanna Be Adored’.
From 25 August 2009 - John 'Jeckie' Leckie interview from The Quietus website: Remastering is not always a case of 'Turning it up':- The reissue is not brick-walled at all, but it's up to what's called a 'commercial level' — don't ask me what that is. If it was quieter it wouldn't be as loud as other bands, so if you were to compare this to one of the earlier CD releases — if you put the two of them into iTunes for example — you'd be amazed at the difference. You'd have to turn it up a lot. When we did this, though, no-one had CDs; The Stone Roses never had a CD release, originally. The main thing was that when it was done for vinyl — and later it was always a copy of a copy — a lot of the bass was cut out, there wasn't much low end. To squeeze sound onto the groove of the vinyl very often you do things like turning the last track down due to distortion created by the increasing tangent of the arm of the record player against the record. You can maintain the overall volume and eliminate that distortion if you reduce your level on the higher frequency and turn the whole thing up. Good things are made to last:- The Stone Roses was mastered at Metropolis but at Abbey Road you've got equipment that's thirty years old. You can't beat it. It's called 'Mil-Spec'. Military Specification; it can't go wrong. It'll survive a nuclear attack, like those Silver Microphones . . . they'll blow up and still work.

"I’d like to write songs for other people, I’d like to finish that Stellify for Rihanna, and I would like to get into that side of it," Ian also expressed his views on the Oasis split saying it was the right thing to do. He explained: "I think it's always bad when they get their dirty linen out in public. "They have gone from scrapping in the carpet to scrapping in front of the world now, so I think (the split) will do them good in the long run. How much further could they take it really?"

The original promo distributed by Sony dropped In The Year 2525, I wonder if this was intended for a b-side but instead was tagged in the middle of the lp as the decline of the single was ongoing.
From 22 July 2009 Wednesday 10:51 - The Guardian Newspaper article, by Sean Michaels : "Thriller was our blueprint," Brown said in an interview with NME.com. Just as Jackson's 1982 LP was filled with killer tunes, Brown hopes My Way, due 28 September, will similarly be stuffed with hits. "Every time we wrote a song we didn't think was strong enough, we scrapped it," he said....Though My Way may serve as a memorial to Jackson, Brown said that the album was conceived long before the singer's death. "We mastered it on the day that Jackson died," he explained. "I'm taking that as a good omen."
From 11 December 2009 - Daily Post by Andy Welch: The aforementioned Stellify is perhaps Brown's best song, at a push, second to his master class in lyricism FEAR. [Each of FEAR's lines begins with those letters - "For each a road", "for everyman a religion", "face everybody and rule" and so on.] "Stellify is the first song I've written since FEAR that's up there with it," he says proudly. "I've now got something to follow it with, and I've been looking for it for the last eight years." The song was originally written for Rihanna. Ian's sometime co-writer and producer, Dave McCracken, is signed to Jay-Z's Roc Nation stable of writers, the only Brit among them, and, through his connections, Ian was invited to write for some American artists.
"Vanity Kills was for Kanye West, too," he says, "but we missed the deadline for that one. Then we wrote Stellify and after a few days of loving the tune, I said 'Let's keep that one for me'. I can hear her singing it, and she'd do it better than me, but I just love it.

29 tember 2009 - Ian Brown and Johnny Marr Television Show Soundtrack collaboration rumours
Notes: Ian tells BBC News of the idea. Johnny Marr (The Smiths/Electronic etc.) writes the music and Ian the lyrics, bringing in session drummer and bass player (possibily Andy Rourke (The Smiths), Paul Ryder (Happy Mondays)?). Recording music for a 3 episode TV drama, penned by a friend of Ian's. "[He's] writing a drama series. One of them's about ticket touts, another one's about grafters – kids who sell T-shirts and things like that – and another one's about pick-pockets."
From 30 September 2009 Wednesday 09:40 - The Guardian Newspaper article, by Sean Michaels: Ian Brown and Johnny Marr to record music for TV series
Tired of being pestered by Stone Roses/Smiths reunion rumours, the pair are to form a Mancunian soundtrack supergroup instead. Ian Brown and Johnny Marr are to team up, recording music for three television dramas. The former Stone Roses frontman and the Smiths guitarist hope to assemble a soundtrack supergroup, possibly including Happy Mondays bassist Paul Ryder or even Brown's former bandmate, Mani.
"The idea is that Johnny writes the music and I write the words and the melodies," Brown told BBC News. Though the Mancunian legends live conveniently close together in Lymm, Cheshire, Brown admitted they will "have to bring a drummer or a bass player in". The collaboration was spurred by a mutual friend, Brown said. "[He's] writing a drama series. One of them's about ticket touts, another one's about grafters – kids who sell T-shirts and things like that – and another one's about pick-pockets." When they are not being pestered by Stone Roses/Smiths reunion rumours, Brown and Marr both keep busy. Brown's sixth solo album, My Way, was released on Monday, while Marr joined the Cribs last year. The two have never worked together before, but according to Brown they almost teamed up 30 years ago. "[Marr is] quoted in a book called The North Will Rise Again by John Robb as saying we'd seen each other around when we were kids, 16 or 17," he told the BBC. At the time, Brown was already playing with Stone Roses guitarist John Squire. "He wanted me to sing and asked a mutual friend, but said 'I won't poach another guitarist's singer'. So we've got to work together now."

October 2009 - Geoff Lloyd Radio Session, Absolute Radio,
From Metro article 02 October 2009 Friday 12:55 pm: The Stone Roses rocker has three sons aged (Frankie) 17, (Casey) 13 and (Emilio) nine and revealed to Absolute Radio DJ Geoff Lloyd that while they may enjoy music they have no plans to follow in his footsteps. Brown revealed: “My eldest son loves music, but you know, they all like mess about – I’ve got drum kits, keyboards, guitars, but they’ve all got the big ambition not to be famous, that’s their main ambition in life.” He added: “From being babies, people coming up and bugging you, you know, loving you, bugging you, whatever, and now everyone’s got the mobile rights so now everyone needs the pictures, and they just see that as a nightmare of a life to them.” The 46-year-old Manchunian musician also said he is happy to accept his legendary status, saying: “If someone’s going to call me a legend or an icon, I’m going to go with it.” But he joked: “I don’t wake up in the morning and think ‘oh you legend’.” Asked how he feels about all the fans who copy his style, Brown laughed: “I’m just glad that it’s me they follow and not Elton John, can you imagine?” But the rocker doesn’t shop for himself anymore. He revealed: “The only item of clothing I’ve bought in the last 11 years is a Burberry cashmere tartan scarf, that’s the only item, I actually was able to give up shopping in Feb ’99. “I get a box sent from Japan, like every eight weeks I get a big box, and there’s my jeans and what not.”

Notes: 14 November was the preview date.

'John Squire: New Work 2009' "This box set contains a collection of 18 prints of new work by John Squire, along with a set of 5 images by photographer Antony Crook of Squire, his studio and working processes. John Squire brings his obsessive meticulous studies of consumer packaging together with this set of works made during 2008-2009. The work includes monumental rusting steel box structures frozen in various states of disassembly. Scorched canvas silhouettes, stamped lead and work in wax and oil continue the exploration of the humble cardboard box. The works can be read as signifying the excesses of consumer packaging, whilst equally seeming to celebrate the intricacies of the packaging form. Contents: 23 145x124,, prints on 350gsm uncoated card. Polite. Publihsed by Pilite. JSX01. Printed and Made In Britain..."

02 December 2009 12:22 - Review by Ben Matthews: Ian Brown at the Ipswich Regent: Maybe I'm not looking hard enough but I can't see one Stone Roses T-shirt. You can usually tell when Ian Brown is in town, as every male born before 1980 is proudly wearing a Pollock-esque piece of John Squire artwork on their torso. But Ian Brown IS in town, and it's potentially a significant turning point in Ipswich's live music ambitions. Tonight, the local musical mould is broken. Tonight, the usually safe bookings of ageing rockers, chart-friendly popstars and nice looking boys who you would take home to your mum, are truly blown out of the water. Tonight, a small corner of Ipswich becomes a homage to the Hacienda era. Well, at least the front handful of rows do. King Monkey knows how to groove his non-Lancastrian subjects into the Mancunian vibe, even those usually reticent loosen up and bop along. He must be pleasantly surprised not having to fend off the usual shouts and requests for Stone Roses tunes. And rightly so, as six solo albums down the track, he has his own repertoire of mooching classics to call upon and even some of those are left out tonight. The likes of Keep What Ya Got, Love Like A Fountain, Corpses, Longsight M13 and F.E.A.R. make for a classic setlist, with tracks from the new album, My Way, slotting in seamlessly. e are humble in the presence of a Godlike genius after all. Gone are the days of stony stares to the back of the venue and nonsensical mumblings between songs. Today's Ian Brown, father and family man, offers plenty of banter with the crowd and his on-stage crew. This currently includes three young female dancers who appear sporadically throughout the set. First thoughts are that they've won an amateur competition at DanceEast to appear onstage, but they keep coming back on. Although their choreography would have Brian Friedman thinking that Jedward are actually decent movers, their rough-and-readiness fits in with the high spirits of the evening. nd although he may not be wearing the T-shirt, a cry of "Fools Gold" comes from a 30-something in the crowd, only to be instantly shot down with "you're 20 years too late, mate". But we only have to wait until the encore for a rendition of said anthem. Say thank you with (Stone) Roses.

F.E.A.R / Elizabeth My Dear / Fools Gold
Notes: Tickets went on sale 27 August 2009 Thursday at 09.30am.
From 06 December 2009 Sunday 23:08 - The Guardian Newspaper article, by Caroline Sullivan: 3 out of 5 stars Brixton Academy, London. By conventional measures of musical ability, Ian Brown's performance here – the first of two sold-out nights – warrants a resounding thumbs-down. Never a mellifluous vocalist, his voice has coarsened to the point where what emerges from his throat is a cross between a bark and a rasp, and is shockingly tuneless. He doesn't deliver songs so much as shove them at the listener with a complete absence of the sinuous, blurry grace that makes his albums worth hearing. And his version of stagecraft is to shuffle on the spot for a couple of minutes, then lope to another quadrant of the stage and do it again, over and over, for 75 minutes. Yet Brown possesses more of the X factor than almost any musician of his generation. He's not a "singer", but his charisma compels you to listen. He doesn't move well, but, silhouettedwith arms outstretched, he's every inch an icon. He even conjures up something close to drama as he lumbers through the a cappella Elizabeth My Dear from the Stone Roses' debut album. From a musical perspective, it's the evening's nadir, but his painful efforts endow the anti-monarchist lyric with real loathing. The last man standing from the second summer of love, he generates happy memories for this crowd, who reward him by doing the late-1980s arms-aloft rave dance, even to new songs from this year's so-so My Way album. Unexpectedly, the tune that provokes the greatest excitement isn't the Roses classic Fool's Gold, which bristles with all the cockiness of old, but the 2001 single FEAR. Why? Who knows? Like Brown, it's unfathomable.

28 September 2010 Tuesday - Ian Brown has a cameo in This Is England '86, Series 1 Episode 4 TV Series
Notes: Ian Brown had a cameo as 'Tempestuous Copper' (a policeman). Funded by Channel 4 this was Shane Meadows TV series, written by Shane and Jack Thorne. Shane would later film The Stone Roses 'Made Of Stone' re-union movie. Ian was a fan of the 2006 film This Is England and the series was a spin-off set three years later. The show focused on the mod revival scene rather than the skinhead subculture. Like the film, This Is England '86 stars Thomas Turgoose as Shaun, although Lol (Vicky McClure) and Woody (Joe Gilgun) play even more central roles. The story takes place during the 1986 FIFA World Cup. As Shaun completes his last school exam, he realises he will have to find his way in the world. His friends, who include Woody, Lol, Smell, Gadget and Meggy, are still around, looking for love, entertainment and employment.

I was there for the full day with my dad. It was a great show with a nice layout. Two stages, The Main stage had some of the bigger names and the 'Circus' style tent stage had The Whip & A Certain Ratio and some others playing too. The stage times were ideal for catching all the 'worthwhile acts'. A Certain Ratio had John Robb in the audience & the singer from The Magic Numbers was there too. I had a joke with Peter Hook when him, and who i presume to be his friend 'Twiggy,' were watching Bad Lieutenant. I said they're not bad but they're not New Order, he smiled and said 'No, never'. I was hoping Ian would appear onstage with UNKLE at some point during the show (like he did at The Manchester Apollo Show 2004) but sadly no collabaration that night. Because the show took place on Friday, the venue was quiet up until 18:00 when fans finished work and made their way to the park. Ian was in fine form, his voice struggled with some of the hits and the audience eagerly awaited the Stone Roses songs...They only got two. I remember there was a lot of bottle throwing too when Ian played the newer string based songs, nothing got as far as the stage but the sentiment was still the same. The NME had published an article online to promote the show mentioning Ian would perform a career spanning set, the NME got it wrong again (no suprises).

December 2010 - Ian appears at Waltham Forest Magistrates' Court, North East London regarding his speeding allegation
Notes: See 16 November 2009 for the initial details. Ian did not respond to any speeding ticket or fine as the court summons was "defective" as the date of the alleged offence on it was incorrect.
Sabrina Samaroo, for the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), said she would not be offering any evidence after discussions with Harriet Bathurst-Norman, counsel for Brown. Ian was represented by Freeman & Co solicitors with lawyer Nick Freeman. Chairman of the magistrates Alan Sims said Ian was free to.
07 December 2010 Tuesday 18:53 The Independent article: Former Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown was told he was "free to go" by a court today after prosecutors dropped a driving charge against him. The 47-year-old, from Lymm, Cheshire, appeared before Waltham Forest Magistrates' Court in north east London to answer a charge of failing to provide information last December relating to the identification of the driver of a car alleged to have committed a speeding offence.
In a short hearing, Sabrina Samaroo, for the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), said she would not be offering any evidence after discussions with Harriet Bathurst-Norman, counsel for Brown. No further details about the charge were given at the court hearing. Chairman of the magistrates Alan Sims, addressing the musician, said: "You have heard the prosecutor say that she is offering no evidence - that means you are free to go."
A statement issued outside the court by Freeman & Co solicitors, which represented Brown, said the singer was summonsed with failing to furnish driver details, after allegedly ignoring both a speeding notice and a reminder. The case arose after a car registered in Brown's name was flashed doing 65mph in a 50mph limit at 10.30pm on November 16 last year, on the A40 near RAF Northolt, the firm said in a statement.
Brown failed to respond to both a speeding notice and a reminder, so a summons was issued for him to appear before court, Freeman & Co said.
Nick Freeman, the celebrity lawyer who represented Brown, said he was "delighted" by the result but criticised the CPS for taking so long in making its decision. He said the summons was "defective" as the date of the alleged offence on it was incorrect. Had he been found guilty, Brown's licence would have automatically been endorsed with six points.

October 2011 - Fabiola Quiroz & Ian divorce
Notes: Married for ten years, the divorce settlement stretched out for over six months.
Ian would initially drive to London every Wednesday to see Emilio, his 11 year old son, and in time would see him three weekends out of four.
Shaun Ryder publicly speculated that the fiancial pinch of Brown's divorce from his Mexican ex-model wife, Fabiola Quiroz, probably helped him bury the hatchet with Squire.
From The Telegraph, 18 October 2011 13:46pm by Murray Wardrop: Fellow Madchester scene star Shaun Ryder hinted over the weekend that Brown had been motivated by the recent split from his Mexican model wife Fabiola Quiroz. “It has been coming for a while. It's amazing what a divorce will make you do,” Ryder said. The singer’s marriage had appeared in trouble two years ago after he was arrested and later released without charge following allegations that he had assaulted his wife, with whom he has a young son.
