April 1999 - Tom Hingley wrote the sleeve notes for The Radio 1 Sessions: Recording sessions for the BBC was always challenging and fun. I have great memories of all the Maida Vale studio sessions recorded for John Peel and Mark Goodier. The opening session on this album wasn't the band's first for John - an embryonic Inspirals had recorded a session in '88 - but within a year, line-up changes had brought together the band that would perform as the Inspiral Carpets for over five years. It also now seems appropriate that our final session, for Mark Radcliffe in 1994, was recorded at BBC studio 3 in 'Madchester', the birthplace of the scene with which we became synonymous. There was something magical and unique about driving down to London in a van, arriving at the Maida Vale studios (which were originally a roller- skating rink) and within iust a few hours thrashing out as many as four songs. These were always special, exclusive to the show and often very different from the album and single recordings. At times, our official studio versions were yet to be recorded and the BBC had the songs on tape even before Mute (our record company) did. Some tracks here were only ever recorded for the BBC and I am pleased they have eventually surfaced. Listening to them now, these versions sound exciting, aggessive and live! It's good to finally have them available. I hope you enioy listening to them as much as we enjoyed making them. Tom Hingley, April 1999

From What Planet Am I On? by Shaun Ryder Book: I think a lot of people know that I saw a UFO when I was younger, particularly as it was featured in the film 24 Hour Party People – although it was portrayed very differently in the film to how it happened in real life. Not that anyone should believe what happens in that film. I liked 24 Hour Party People, I thought it was a good film, but it’s a film; that’s not me. That’s not a documentary about my life. The Shaun Ryder in the film is a caricature. It amazes me how people just swallow everything whole.
