03 January 2022 - Bez is caught driving at 90mph
Notes: The 58-year-old cut across an unmarked police car and undertook other drivers in his Bentley Continental. He was arrested after leaving the road at Junction 5 near Manchester Airport.
Bez would be fined £1000 for careless driving by Warrington's Magistrates Court. Three points were added to his licence and he was ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £101 as well as costs of £400.
Berry, of Hereford, claimed he speeded up as he thought "some kind of weirdo" was following him, the Crown Prosecution Service said. Police followed him for 13 minutes on the north-bound carriageway in Cheshire "after he cut across their vehicle, forcing them to brake", the court heard. Officers then saw him "undertaking other cars and driving at excessive speeds through speed restricted roadworks". His Bentley was also seen cutting across all three lanes of the motorway in front of a white van.
He denied a charge of driving without due care and attention but was found guilty after a trial.

07 November 2022 - The Big Issue Bez Interview: If I could relive any day of my life it would be my wedding day [earlier this year to Firouzeh Razavi]. Everything about it was just joy and happiness. Getting married in the church then the party. Poor Father Bob, he’d never held a service quite like it before. Everyone got up and danced. A lot of people said to me, Bez, I never thought I’d be dancing and singing hymns in church. Our first wedding dance was to Absolute Beginners by David Bowie. I had two big marquees set up in my garden, and when you went outside you could see the mountain I got engaged on top of. It was such a beautiful setting, the whole day was the stuff of dreams really.

Shaun Ryder | Rolla Factory 251, Manchester Friday 7th October 2022
Shaun Ryder returns to his spiritual home of Factory after 11 years since his last solo stint. He’s still got that magic Manc touch as Wayne AF Carey discovers on a rain swept night in town…
I only found out about this gig on Tuesday and who am I to miss the opportunity to see the legend Shaun Ryder back where he belongs on stage. And not just any stage. The place where the madness of The Mondays caused carnage back in the day under the watchful eye of Anthony H Wilson. You should all know the story by now. Anyway, I’ve tipped up tonight to witness a special event curated by This Feeling and Scotts Menswear, all in the aid of the mental health charity Mind and you’ll never spend a better six quid on a gig like this anywhere in town. The magic is in the air from the moment I walk into this legendary iconic place, adorned with a picture of Wilson behind the check-in desk. First thing first lets check out the support band.
There’s a big buzz in the air for Rolla. They seem to have brought a huge crowd in for their energetic set judging by the youthful lads and lasses that make me feel like the old bastard I am. I’ve heard the rumours about this lot and I’m here to make my own mind up. Yes, they sound like The Verve / Oasis. Yes, the frontman is the bastard child of a weird love triangle between Ashcroft and Gallagher. Are they any good? Fuckin’ too right they are. There are lots of pretenders to the Oasis throne yet these guys are for real. A cracking set of tight tunes from a group that are going to be massive. Anthem after anthem of stand out tunes for the huge indie brigade. Attitude from the start by James on vocals who has future rock star stomping all over his stylistic swagger, with a guitarist sporting a dodgy tache that looks out of place on purpose and a unit that rocks the place with punk attitude. Watch this space and watch them rise very fast…
Is this a coincidence that Alan Mcgee happens to be doing a DJ set? Rolla have yet to release their debut EP and with Alan’s Oasis connections there are questions hanging in the air… He plays an eclectic set of old school tunes and the kids in here are so clued in they lap it all up. A great remix of Pink Floyd’s See Emily Play sounds huge and he throws in a few Bowie classics to get the mood ramped right up for Ryder’s rollicks.
Shaun Ryder hits the stage to a massive applause with his new band which includes the brilliantly named local guitarist Seth Leppard who knows his shit on that fretboard. He airs a few tunes from his excellent album Visits From Future Technology (reviewed here). A storming start of Electric Scales and loads of banter has the crowd grinning like idiots, especially when he keeps asking the drummer “What the fuck are we playing next then?” A funky as fuck Close The Dam is a highlight full of the familiar drug references, then a sexy crooning Monster has Ryder back to his best with his fractured tone as familiar as ever, which carries on with the magic of Pop Voodoo. The biggest applause of the night which threatens to blow the bloody doors off is the arrival of old time buddy Kermit for a set of Black Grape songs that sends shivers up me spine. A raucous Tramazi Party has the place bouncing and Kermit is like a loose cannon delivering his Manc rap like a lethal weapon. Shaun and Kermit are hugging each other and smiling throughout like long lost brothers once again. The set closes with the brilliance of Reverend Black Grape which is probably one of the best tunes Ryder has delivered in his career. A show stealer that has the tune still ringing in my ears as I depart the place. The only surprise of the night is no Bez. We could only but hope… Another gig of the year for the lucky few…

Article Bez Interview written by Mark Millar for XSNOIZE.com: Do you think you will ever follow up your autobiography 'Freaky Dancin'?
Bez: Yeah, one day I definitely will do, but not at the moment, because I've still got a few more years of living to go. I don’t know if anyone would be interested in reading another part to it, but I will consider it. It's one of them tasks when you take it on you wouldn’t believe how difficult it is to do really. It's over twenty-odd years since I wrote that one, and a lot has happened since then up until now, but I've definitely got some funny stories I could tell.

Notes: Bookabookshop site article read: "Join us for an evening with Mark Berry – forever known to the world as Bez, as he talks about his extraordinary life captured in his new memoir Buzzin: The Nine Lives of a Happy Monday. Bez first came to prominence at the turn-of-the-1990’s as the maraca-wielding dancer with ‘Madchester’ giants Happy Mondays. Neither an accomplished musician nor even a very good dancer, Bez was a prime candidate for fleeting celebrity, soon to sink into ‘Where Are They Now?’ obscurity. That, however, never happened, nor does it show any sign of happening. Through Black Grape, the second band he co-fronted with the Mondays’ Shaun Ryder, and his ever-presence in the mass media, Bez’s popularity has grown exponentially, his star rocketing ever upwards. When he bowled into Celebrity Big Brother in 2005, he ended up winning the series, as viewers came to understand his fundamental decency and sunny outlook. His adult life has been extraordinary: unbelievable scrapes with mortality, periods of financial ruin, and narcotic-strewn hi-jinx. Written with the assistance of estimable rock and roll ghostwriter, Andrew Perry, Buzzin: The Nine Lives of a Happy Monday, is the story of a bad lad who has turned his life good, tracing his passage from early-thirty-something casualty to middle-aged politician, eco-warrior and bee-aficionado. This is an event not to be missed!"

Mantra Of The Cosmos - 2023 - Zak Starkey forms Mantra Of The Cosmos
Zak Starkey - Drums
Shaun Ryder - Vocals

Bez - Bez Vibes
Notes: Supergroup with Shaun, Bez, Ex-Ride and Oasis member Andy Bell and The Who, Oasis, Lightning Seeds drummer Zak Starkey. Alan McGee helped Zak form the band, Alan was Shaun's manager at the time.
From 28 June 2023 Clash Music Website, Article by Kieran Macadie:
“It’s Cosmic Rock ‘N’ Roll Dude!” Shaun Ryder, Bez Talk Mantra Of The Cosmos
“More supernova than supergroup!” Poised to immerse listeners in a captivating voyage of sonic exploration, Mantra Of The Cosmos is a new celestial phenomenon, transcending boundaries and awakening dormant senses. Not to mention, there’s plenty of familiar faces too.
Described as “more supernova than supergroup”, Mantra of the Cosmos is the latest project from the mind of Zak Starkey (son of Ringo Starr, ex-Oasis, and a member of The Who), who then recruited Andy Bell (Oasis, Ride), and the Mancunion phenomena, best mates Shaun Ryder and Bez (Happy Mondays, Black Grape).
With the band’s first single out now titled ‘Gorilla Guerilla’, a heavy psychedelic number taking the listener on hypnotic experience, things are only just getting started. But with a slot at Glastonbury and further live shows coming up over the summer, their cosmos is only going to expand at light speed.
To properly introduce the supergroup before their expected raucous live shows, a pair that need no introduction have spoken to Clash all about it, Shaun Ryder and Bez.
So how did it all begin?
“Zak approached me and asked if I wanted to do something,” begins Shaun, “and I said ‘yeah of course’, and that’s how it went with Andy and Bez I think.”
“Yeah Alan McGee first approached me on it” adds Bez “and said there was a new project being put together by Zak and Shaun, and Shaun already said that I’m joining anyway, he’d already made my mind up for me before I was even asked. It’s great and the great thing about it is I get my own maraca solo!”
As of recent weeks, Mantra of the Cosmos has a new member exclusively for Glastonbury. “Now we’ve got Brix Smith (ex-The Fall) joining us on bass.” continues Shaun. “I met Brix years and years ago in The Hacienda when she was always there with Mark (the late Mark E. Smith, The Fall frontman) and we haven’t really spoke since, but we met on Monday night at our first gig, and now she’s in the band!”
Bez continues: “I was speaking to her at the show and she said ‘Bez put a word in for me because I can see myself in the band’ and I thought ‘how am I gonna get myself round this one’, but it went beyond me and I think she got herself in the band with her own reality creating, know what I mean?”
The new single ‘Gorilla Guerilla’ is unlike anything any of the band members have done previously. Whilst elements of the likes of Happy Mondays and Ride are present, it amalgamates into something entirely unique.
“It’s so different from anything that’s come before,” says Bez “and I know I shouldn’t compare it but my analysis of it is when Miles Davis did the ‘Bitches Brew’ album in the 70s and he changed the whole face of jazz at the time, and I know it’s not in the same league but that’s what I’m sort of comparing it to.”
“It’s nothing like I’ve done before either,” Shaun adds ”it’s nothing like the Mondays or Black Grape, it’s cosmic rock and roll dude!”
It begs the question of where this brand new sound comes from.
“I don’t know how much Andy did on that,” says Shaun “but I didn’t write the Gorilla thing and didn’t have anything to do with the music, it was basically Zak and his Mrs (Sshh Starkey), and I just sort of did the vocal on that one. We’ve got about eight or ten tracks ready to go, and certainly when it comes to the music it’s all Zak, I think Andy did the guitar but Zak did all the bass and the drums.”
Eight or ten tracks definitely sounds like the length of an album, and one would hope. “Yeah either an album or a load of singles, but I think an album is what we’re aiming for yeah and then we can go out and do some more gigs.”
Bez adds: “I think it’s probably some of the best stuff we’ve ever done. It’s so nice for me and Shaun as a partnership and looking at all the stuff we’ve done over the years, and now it’s the best we’ve ever done.”
When asked about who came up with the cosmically fitting name Mantra of the Cosmos, Shaun again exclaims “Zak! “Zak’s a very talented dude, he’s the song and dance man, can make the film, the video, the lot, whereas me, I just get a few lyrics together. “Andy’s great as well, and what’s funny is I haven’t met Andy Bell since over 20 years ago, and me and Andy started off on the wrong foot! The Mondays were supporting Oasis at Bolton Wanderers football ground in the early 2000s, and Andy walked into an argument, and I walked into an argument, and somebody in our firm was arguing with somebody Andy was connected to, and he had to take his side and I had to take our side, and then I never saw him again for over 22 years or something! Never met again until we both met with Zak, and what a great guy he is!”
‘Gorilla Guerilla’ sounds like a song made for the stage, and Mantra of the Cosmos made their live debut on Monday 5th June at The Box in London, and it seems like it went down very well.
“I think it went down well, I enjoyed it!” says Bez.
“It was great.” continues Shaun, “It was a pretty insider type crowd with a lot of friends and family, but I really enjoyed myself and I know Bez did.”
The gig at The Box acted as a warm up for the band’s huge performance on The Glade stage at Glastonbury on Sunday.
“I’m really excited about it,” says Bez, “as you can’t get any better debut anywhere than Glastonbury, that’s like the pinnacle of all places to play at. I can’t think of anywhere better to get started.
“We’re gonna have to put together a 75 or 60 minute show,” adds Shaun, “we’ve definitely got enough material, and everyone can expect rock and roll baby! Sort of a cosmic punk vibe. They can expect us to be enjoying it, and if we’re enjoying it I’m sure they will too.”
“Nobody has to make a special trip out to come and see you,” continues Bez, “we’ve got a really good chance to play to a really good audience, first gig, we’ve got to go out there and impress you know what I mean?. Bez’s maraca solo sounds convincing enough for festival goers, right?
“Well that’s worth waiting for!” he laughs. “This is my first chance to shine as they say.”
Apart from being known for their raucous stage presence, Shaun and Bez have recently been fan favourites on Channel 4’s Celebrity Gogglebox, which has just returned to screens for a new series. One would hope they’ve been watching lots of great telly. “When we get together with the Gogglebox team, they give us a bunch of telly to watch,” says Shaun. “I’ve not watched much telly in the last few months really because I’ve been out and about. We’ve got a new Black Grape album coming out as well, we’ve just finished that so that comes out in October.”
“When we first done it,” Bez continues, “it was the height of the pandemic and we got down there, and the producers were telling us to stay apart. Then we thought, ‘we’ve been in a rock and roll band together for the past 30 years, we’ve shared far worse germs!’ But I hardly watched telly either, I like the fella who does the bikes, the motorbike fella who wears the flat caps, I can’t remember his name. That’s the only telly I’ll sit and watch though, because we’ve got all them film channels now. When we come in and settle down for the evening we’ll always look for some film to watch. You can pick a film for the evening and go to bed. I very rarely have time to watch TV.”
With Mantra of the Cosmos, Happy Mondays and Black Grape set to tour simultaneously, all alongside appearances on Celebrity Gogglebox, Shaun and Bez have a lot to balance in their illustrious careers. “You know what,” exclaims Shaun, “doing it, completely straight, and not out your mind on drugs, is very easy. I’ve been clean about 20 years now. You might think it’s a lot easier off your face, but it’s a lot easier when you’re not.”

From 28 June 2023 Clash Music Website: ‘Gorilla Guerilla’ sounds like a song made for the stage, and Mantra of the Cosmos made their live debut on Monday 5th June at The Box in London, and it seems like it went down very well.

18 October 2023 - The 13th Floor’s Simon Coffey review: Happy Mondays – Powerstation: October 17, 2023. Happy Mondays Like their 2019 show, tonight’s party is also sold out, billed as a ‘Greatest Hits Tour’, the original purveyors of Acid Indie Rock led by frontman Shaun Ryder promised a night of Madchester favourites, played by an almost original line of Happy Mondays, as sadly in the interim Shaun Ryder’s brother Paul Ryder, bassist in the band passed away. So for the 50ish-aged crowd tonight, it was back to the early 90s, when Chicago’s Acid House triggered aural revolution influenced across the genres, the Salford lads reigned supreme in Manchester (and elsewhere), and just before it went all Pete Tong for the Happy Mondays and Factory Records (Why? check out the movie Twenty-Four Hour Party People)
Silk Cut - Like Happy Mondays, the members of Silk Cut have a few laps under their belt. Andrew Silk CutThorne, Aidan Phillips, Jayden Lee and Justin McLean, in particular Thorne in groups such as the Calico Brothers and his session/live work with Bic Runga, Dave Dobbyn, and Tim Finn. The experience shows as Silk Cut efficiently and professionally thundered through a set of seven songs, wearing a lot of hats and several pairs of sunglasses. Their sound is somewhat 90’s, aimed at the shoegaze generation (think recent visitors Slowdive), but comes off sounding more like U2 vs REM meets Durutti Column, it’s indie rock, but perhaps it was a little too slick and overly complex to leave a lasting impression on me. Make your mind up by checking out their recently released debut album Our Place in the Stars available on all the usual platforms.
Happy Mondays - Prompt and punctual at 9.30 pm, the members of Happy Mondays partition on stage, creating a sound bed, cheering, waving to, and teasing the audience, a massive cheer when Rowetta appears with tassels in hand, and after a nervous (not too long) wait, Shaun and Bez appear to tumultuous applause, and the Happy Mondays launch into Kinky Afro.
Happy MondaysThe impact of the lifestyle of Happy Mondays during the ’80/90s was evident in Shaun Ryder in 2019, and his performance was drab and limited. But tonight it is already evident that the intervening years between shows has seen Shaun Ryder recapture some of the vigour and voice of the band’s halcyon days. Perhaps he has adopted the ginger, turmeric and juice diet that Bez turned to almost a decade ago, whatever has happened, he is chatty and back in control on stage. After the buzz created by Kinky Afro, the band, who are already sounding tight (including the new bassist) in an organised chaotic manner, run to a set list that Shaun Rhyder is reading like a bible. His feigning a slight that someone has been messing with the order and choices, makes for entertainment for the audience, as he keeps teasing they should play Hallelujah now and get it over and done with. But before he has his way (or not) The Happy Mondays dig deep and continue to play from 1990’s Pills ‘n’ Thrills and Bellyaches: God’s Cop, Donovan, Dennis and Lois and Loose Fit, all with rants and reminiscences from Shaun, with Loose Fit raising the crowd high as the vocals bounce off the signature riffs coming from Mark Day’s Guitar.
Onstage there is a madness in the interaction between Shaun, Bez and Rowetta, each going on and offstage (Shaun a lot less than the other two), all three leading the band in their way. Shaun Ryder has an almost Mark E Smith (The Fall) manner as he commands the narrative, and as alluded to earlier, his energy levels and compos mentis far exceeding 2019 performance with the band, perhaps he is feeding off the audience’s enjoyment and adulation, tonight’s version of Mad Cyril from Bummed (1988) is a case in point.
Tart Tart is a nice dive from the band’s catalogue, as the erstwhile Shaun Ryder continues to threaten to play Hallelujah… the setlist prevails as Rave On and Bob’s Yer Uncle (a personal favourite) lead the audience on a merry chase to whence the iconic sounds of Hallelujah set the room bouncing and swaying, which is quickly followed by 24 Hour Party People and the ‘twisting my melon man crowd pleaser’ Step On. On and off stage toot suite, and the encore is 1988’s Wrote For Luck from Bummed! (‘Cause you’re not made of jean, You’re made of chocolate) A perfecto-finale for the people in the Powerstation, who have been partying for 75 minutes non-stop!

Notes: I was there. Shaun came on stage smoking his e-cigarette which prompted audience members to light up real cigs and electronic ones too. There was a lot of inbetween chatter between Shaun and Kermit, most of it was inaudible. Shaun had to watch the que screen for the lyrics and when to start. Kermit had to watch the que screen for some of the newer songs. It was the first show of the short tour, so hopefully things can only get better. The backing band were tight though. Tom Hingley & The Kar-Pets, for me, played the better set.
Rowetta was backstage.

From 06 December 2023 17:42 - Manchester Evening News M.E.N Website: Liam Gallagher, Rowetta and Ian Brown amongst stars to pay respects to Imelda Mounfield at ‘beautiful’ funeral service. Imelda, the wife of Stone Roses' star Mani, was laid to rest at a service on Tuesday. Article By Adam Maidment.
Some of the biggest names in Manchester’s music scene came together to pay their respects following the funeral of Imelda Mounfield.
Imelda, the wife of Stone Roses’ star Mani, passed away at the age of 52 last month. Her death came just three years after she was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer. Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown was amongst those to pay tribute to the events agent, posting on social media: “RIP @imeldamounfield. GOD BLESS MANI and his boys X”
The funeral service was held on Tuesday (December 5) at St Chad’s Church on Cheetham Hill Road, near to the city centre. Hundreds of people are believed to have been in attendance, with well-known faces including Liam Gallagher, Shaun Ryder and Clint Boon.
Ian Brown, John Squire, Rowetta, Martin Moscrop, Simon Moran, Irvine Welsh and Bobby Gillespie also attended the service. It was followed by a wake held at the Irish Heritage Centre in Cheetham Hill.
Posting on social media following the service, Happy Mondays star Rowetta wrote: “Your Mani and all your loved ones did you proud today, Imelda Mounfield. Such a beautiful service. The church was beautiful and rammed full of all your family and friends."
She added: “Afterwards all the old heads turned out, Mani's band mates from the Roses and Primal Scream, Liam Gallagher, Mondays and so many more. Special thanks to Imelda's brother and nephew, and Mani's cousins who I met at Stone Roses Dublin for their kind words to me and Mani of course. “I loved her and she gave me so much love. I'll miss everything about her, we all will."
Imelda is survived by Mani, 61, and their two twin boys, aged ten. In recent years, the pair have helped raise huge sums of money for local charities thanks to a series of superstar auctions. The auctions, which have raised money for the likes of Maggie’s, The Christie Hospital, and The Stockport Charitable Trust, have sold celebrity items such as David Beckham’s football boots, signed drumsticks from Reni and a signed snare drum head from Zak and Ringo Starr.
