1993 - Shaun is dating Oriele (Oriole) Leitch, Donovan's daughter.
Notes: Shaun and Oriole would later have a daughter, Coco. Coco would become a painter, sculptor and a performance artist.
From March 2020 - Uncut Magazine, Donovan Interview by Sam Richards: How was Shaun Ryder as a son-in-law? Al Knight, via email. D: Before Shaun and his brother got involved with my two daughters, they visited me in a Manchester hotel. [My wife] Linda and I had realised that the hottest band of the ’80s was into Donovan. Anyway, when they’re leaving the hotel suite, they were trying to take the paintings off the wall and unscrew the door handles. I said, “Boys, how much do you need? I’ll give you the money!” [On another occasion] Linda wanted to make sure the girls were all right. Ecstasy was clean then, and she went straight to Shaun and said, “We want the best, and take us to the club!” We danced in the Haçienda all fuckin’ night. Linda danced everybody under the table and the story in Manchester was, “We couldn’t keep up!” Shaun and Oriole had a beautiful daughter, Coco. She’s an incredible artist, not only a painter and sculptor but a performance artist, which makes sense being Shaun’s daughter. They’ve been estranged, but at one point they’ll get together. I’d like Shaun to meet his daughter again and for them to realise they’re part of the same journey.
1993 - Mark Day forms a new group with Andy Rourke
From 20 March 1993 NME Magazine article: Mark Day confirmed that he, Davis and Whelan have formed a band with former Smiths bassist Andy Rourke. They are rehearsing in Manchester and looking for a deal. They hope to release their first material and maybe play a one-off live date sometime in the summer. Ironically. Rourke, together with Mike Joyce, is currently sueing Morrissey and Johnny Marr over unpaid Smiths royalties.
March 1993 - Shaun Ryder appears on The Word, TV Show
Notes: Shaun was accompanied by girlfriend Oriele (Oriole) Leitch
06 March 199x - Shaun is fined £650 and is disqualified from driving for 18 months
From Melody Maker : ...he pleaded guilty to a drink-driving charge. Shaun was breath tested and found to be more than twice the legal limit....
03 April 1993 - Shaun's New Band Rumours from Melody Maker Magazine
Shaun Ryder is setting up a new band— The Mondays — with brother Paul and Bez. Former Smiths collaborator guitarist Craig Gannon, ex- James drummer Gavan Whelan and a member of Mancunian rap group the Ruthless Rap Assassins have also been recruited, Ryder says.
Speaking on last Fridays The Word, accompanied by new girlfriend Oriele Leitch, he dismissed hopes of a Happy Mondays reunion with a sarcastic jibe as his former collaborators. "Mark the guitarist, the keyboard player and the other guy who played the drums — you know, the really important people in the Happy Mondays — have gone off and done their own thing, so that's it. And the Mondays are still going on...."
The closing titles of the programme showed Ryder dancing with Zippy. Bungle and George from classic kids TV show Rainbow.

Notes: Paul 'Wags' Wagstaff, ex-Paris Angels guitarist, formed a new band with Shaun and Bez and started rehearsing in Manchester. The band did not even have a name yet. Kermit from Ruthless Rap Assassins and drummer Ged Lynch from Instastella join the rehearsal sessions.
During the sessions Craig Gannon (former Smiths 'rebel' additional guitarist) and Martin Wright (Interstella) both recorded with Shaun's new band.
From 20 March 1993 NME Magazine article: Meanwhile, suggestions that Shaun Ryder and Bez are planning to form their own group remained unconfirmed last week. Reports that the pair were trying to schedule a date at Manchester University's Academy venue were denied by the Students' Union.
N - 03 June 1993 - NME Magazine misinterpret Manic Street Preachers cover of Happy Mondays Wrote For Luck as a collabaration with Shaun.
Notes: Apparently M.S.P were to perform the cover live on Naked City (Channel 4 TV Show) but Shaun could not appear as he was still ill from his recent holiday in Morocco. The finished recording would later appear on the B-Side for '' & the M.S.P. B-Sides compilation 'Lipstick Traces'.
From NME Magazine 03 June 1993: Meanwhile, Ryder's collaboration with Manic Street Preachers on a version of Happy Mondays' classic single 'Wrote For Luck' may still go ahead, despite Ryder's non appearance at a recent recording session. The Manics, who performed the song during last Wednesday' s low-key performance at London's Marquee, had hoped to team up with the former Mondays vocalist for Channel 4's new pop series Naked City, but plans were put on ice due to Ryder having allegedly been taken ill following a holiday in Morocco.
N - 03 June 1993 - Shaun Ryder & Stella Grundy record a duet version of 'Can You Fly Like You Mean It?'
Notes: Intastella singer and Shaun recorded a new version of Intastella song 'Can You Fly Like You Mean It?'. It appeared on the b-side to Drifter. Released as Intastella.
From NME Magazine 03 June 1993: HAPPY MONDAYS' former Singer SHAUN RYDER has recorded a duet with the lead singer of Manchester dance-pop outfit Intastella. N - 1993 - Gary Kurfist of Radioative Records contacts Shaun Ryder
Notes: Gary Kurfist, head of Radioative Records, was in contact with Shaun after the break up of the Happy Mondays. Gary expressed interest in Shaun's new project and requested a demo tape. Gary was responsible for organising the New York Music Festival which hosted Janis Joplin, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix and more.
12 March 1994 - Mark Day's Reveals New Projects with Edward Barton & 'Trigger Happy' with Mark Graveson and Eddie
Blaney.
Notes: Eddie aka Ed Blaney would later record & release music with The Fall leader Mark E. Smith.
From Melody Maker Magazine 12 March 1994
TRIGGER HAPPY - EX-MONDAY - EX-HAPPY MONDAYS guitarist Mark Day has re-emerged and is working on two new proiects. One is a songwriting collaboration with Edward Barton, the infamous Mancunian eccentric ...who... Opus Ill's hit, "It's A Fine Day"...
The other is a new trio, Trigger Happy, completed by keyboard player and drummer Mark Graveson and singer Eddie Blaney. Mark told The Maker: "With Edward, we're looking for a singer. We've got songs, but we just need some other chemistry to put into it. With Trigger Happy, we've got five or six tunes together and we've got interest from Polydor. They want to see us live, which we haven't got round to yet, but it will happen when we feel ready..."
"I've got to whip it into shape and things going. I'm desperate! I'm skint! We've got to some live stuff because people want to see it, but it'll happen when we've got 10 songs together and we feel ready to go up there. I can't put a definite date on it.
"I want to keep the numbers in the band down. I know that as well as being a musician you've got to be a bit Of a businessman — especially as one out of the Mondays! I had to do another IOU for a while to finance what I'm doing. I did some franchising, distributing educational material to companies. It distracted me from music for a while, but I'm not going to be doing it for much longer.
"I've been so disillusioned with the music business that I just put my guitar down and didn't want to do anything for ages. When I got together with Eddie, it was just one of those chance meetings but we ended up getting some tunes together.
"His voice has got to mature a lot more. He and Mark are like virgins, and I'm a bit more advanced; so I'm giving them a crash course. The music is like the Mondays should have been, but with a funk in it. The dance theme should stay there, but it's a bit more jazzy- There's a bit Of Led Zeppelin in it —it's a bit more guitar-oriented, a bit more rock'n'roll. I'm sick of all the sequenced, sampled shit. But then, after the Mondays, all I was left with was a few guitars, so all I could do was write on guitar. It's like John Major said — back to basics! "I'm not going to stick to one band, I'm going to spread myself around and do as many different things as I can. I'm ready now to stop sitting around moping an' do something positive with life again. "
1994 - Drone Studios, Chorlton
Notes: Shaun went into Drone Studios, Chorlton and recorded some demos and sent them to Radioactive Records.
N - 1994 - Radioative Records agree to sign 'Black Grape' and Danny Saber is hired to record the new material.
Notes: Gary approved of the band's demos and hired Danny Saber to record them. Saber had worked with and on music by some of the biggest bands in the world (Bowie, U2, Ozzy Osborne and more).
The band did not have a name until Kermit was seen drinking a can of Black Grape juice. Shaun liked the name and they needed a name to sign the record deal.
From February 1995 - Select Magazine, Tony Wilson said: Shaun Ryder's just formed a new duo called Black Grape. But, when I asked him why, Shaun said, because he's black and I love grapes."
13 September 2021 -The Big Issue EASY RYDER (7 MINUTES) Shaun Ryder Interview: TBI: You must prefer working solo without all the politics of working with a band? SWR: The Mondays split up in about '92 or '93. It was only a couple of years later that I had the first Black Grape album out. As soon as the Mondays was over I was straight over to LA to start something new. In 1995 the first Black Grape album [It's Great When You're Straight... Yeah!] went to number one. I was signed as a solo artist but I was too insecure to go out alone so insisted on teaming up with Kermit and recording as a band. We didn’t have a name and so at the last minute they said we needed a name for the contract. Kermit turned up in the studio drinking from a can that said Black Grape on it so we just said we’d use that. The rest of the band were just session musicians, which made the whole recording process much easier. Once I started working with professional musicians I never looked back.
1994 - Rockfield Studios, Monmouth, Wales.
In The Name Of The Father
Notes: They recorded eight songs during the initial sessions.
1994 - Chapel Studios, Alford, Lincolnshire.
Notes:
1994/1995 - Boundary Row Studios, London, SE1 8HP
Notes: During the Boundary Row recording sessions, the band ran out of drugs. They were mainly taking Ecstasy, Tamezepan and Guinness too. One of the session members sarcastically remarked 'It's great when you are straight' and Shaun picked up on thr quote, hence the LP title. Producer/bassist Danny Sabre and producer-come-keyboard-player Stephen Lironi contributed during the sessions.
1995 - It's Great When You're Straight Yeah! Mixing Sessions, Encore Studios, L.A., U.S.A
Notes: The album was mixed at Encore Studios in L.A. by Tom Lord-Alge.
M - Ian Brown on Happy Mondays, 01 March 1995 - Ian Brown appears on the cover of 'The Face Magazine' Issue 78, March 1995
''I’d always thought that us and the Mondays would make things more real, but – and I don’t know why it happens – it all peters out and goes wrong. You know those lads in the Mondays, I feel proper sorry for them, They’re great musicians and they can play, but I seen Mark Day a year ago and you know what? He couldn’t afford to buy a cot for his daughter.''
1995 - Paul Ryder asks Reni to form a band

04 August 1995 Friday - Feile Festival, pairc ui chaoimh, Cork, Republic Of Ireland
Notes: Loads of fans caught the ferry over to watch the band perform. The festival was made up of the main arena, Gaelic football stadium with the pitch covered with hundreds of gymnasium crash mats, fairground rides, a few food vans, bars and a dance tent.
As Bez walks on, he takes the mic and shouts "0161 in the area!", Shaun follows shortly after, Bez continues 'Meet The Gang ‘Cos The Boys Are Here' from 1970's U.K TV Show It Ain’t Half Hot Mum.
Kermit dedicated a song to Ian Brown "This one’s going out to Ian Brown, ‘cos he’s a fookin’ geezer.". Ian watched from the side of the stage, The Stone Roses headlined Sunday night. After the set, Shaun, Bez and Ian watch Tricky perform.
From 19 August 1995 - NME Magazine, Review by Johnny Cigarettes: FEILE ATTRACTION... What the world is waiting for, however, is BLACK GRAPE. And if we haven’t had quite the absence to make the heart grow fonder that the Roses had, the roar of affection as Bez leaps into view is truly heart-warming. "0161 in the area!" he yells, because Il Shaunio himself mooches on, at which Bez breaks into a rousing chorus of ‘Meet The Gang ‘Cos The Boys Are Here’ from It Ain’t Half Hot Mum. This is what they want – balls out fruitcake entertainment, preferably with loads of swearing. Fifty-seven expletives and four loopy grooves later, Kermit says a very strange thing. "This one’s going out to Ian Brown, ‘cos he’s a fookin’ geezer."
There’s a cheer, and a glowing white figure at the wings of the stage waves regally. F—ing hell, it’s him!
Yes, it’s Ian Brown, as we live and can’t breathe. Bopping away in the corner in an uncannily similar manner to Liam Gallagher, saluting his public and practising swaggering on the spot.
And then, after the Grape’s triumphant set, lo! It hath come to pass, that sitting at stage-side watching TRICKY with loud appreciation are Shaun Ryder, Ian Brown and Bez! The Godfather, The Prodigal Son and The Unholy Ghost! Smoking the same spliff!
Seizing the opportunity of a lifetime, I ask them if we can take a photograph.
"Sure," says Shaun. "If you get us all a beer."
The European Beer Retrieving record is promptly shattered, and paparazzo legend Ed Sirrs descends upon the merry throng.
"Hey!" snaps Ian Brown, wagging a bony finger. "I recognise you, yer coont. You tried to rip us off, with them photos a few years back. You can go fook yerself, pal." Oh dear, Ian is referring, believe it or not, to some live photos Ed took of the Roses six years ago, which, via syndication and unknown to Ed, ended up being used on a Mercury phonecard. This, to Ian Brown, is the most heinous of crimes, which even six years on cannot be forgiven. Funny lad. And believe me, he gets funnier....

1995 - It’s Great When You’re Straight…Yeah! Signing Session, Virgin Records, Times Square, New York, U.S.A.
Notes:
From North Fork Sound, Howard Thompson, New Suffolk, NY 23rd St, NYC, USA: Shaun and Bez went on to form Reverend Black Grape. The last time I saw Shaun was at an in-store at a Virgin Records, Times Square in 1995, signing copies of their fine debut, "It’s Great When You’re Straight…Yeah!" He was genuinely pleased to see me, gave me a cd signed "To H from X" and invited me to the band's NYC debut at Irving Plaza later that night. I was allowed to watch the performance from the side of the stage. No one but crew, friends and family got that privilege. One thing I'll say about Shaun Ryder, he's never disappointed me. He's always been a stand up guy. Loyal, funny, sharp and, well...more talented than he's ever been given credit for. He's got a way with words, has Shaun. Not to mention a style that's one in a million. I think he's one of the best people I've had the privilege of working with. A double-top man.

Notes: Kermit did not appear on stage.
NME reviewed the show, see 13 January 1996 NME Magazine.
According to the tour poster ''Tickets On Sale 9AM Wednesday 27 September. Limited To Four Per Person.''
An audience recording bootleg exsists for The Stone Roses.
Grahame Rae Said: ''Older and wiser (see Glasgow Green 1990 entry), I saw them at Sheffield at the end of the Second Coming tour. Memory fully active this time, I was treated to the sad (but you just knew he'd be alright and it was funny) sight of Shaun Ryder reading his lyrics from a sheet of paper, repeating the same line so many times the whole band turned to look at him, and Kermit the rapper (I think) bouncing across the stage to give him a dunt during Black Grape supporting. He then started singing the rest of the song, like a skipping record. He totally wasn't there for a good 30 seconds. Lights went down, Breaking Into Heaven intro comes on, the obviously not very matey Roses (well, three quarters of them) appeared, Adored starts, all looks great, then the drummer starts his best Guns N Roses impersonation. Don't know how you feel about the ‘non proper’ lineup but it didn't sound too good from a drumming perspective. Ian Brown fluffed a few lines, regularly didn't try to hit a high note, always seeming to sing them an octave lower than even the audience. Kept making high pitched monkey noises. Mani looked like a man possessed, I think knowing what we do now he could see this might be the second last show (with Squire). As far as I know he was already lined up for Primal Scream if it went wrong after he realised John Squire was writing songs and keeping them to himself.'' Overall though, really enjoyed it, ignored the drums, had half of my body on the cover of NME (believe me, I didn't even keep it, other than the guys I was with, nobody in the world would have known it was me) and left happy. Ears ringing, dressed in a t-shirt in the snow.''

Shaun & Kermit appear on Star Trek Night
From What Planet Am I On? by Shaun Ryder Book:
Years later, after I started Black Grape with Kermit, who was a big Star Trek nut as well (he just happened to be, that’s not why we started the band together), we were asked to go on a Star Trek night on BBC2. We had to talk about how we first got into it and what we thought about different characters, and our opinion on Star Trek: The Next Generation and all that. I remember when The Next Generation started in the mid-eighties. When I first heard they were going to do it, I thought, ‘Awww, bollocks!’ I just thought it was a really bad idea, and it was going to be terrible and ruin Star Trek for everyone. But after watching the first few episodes I admit I was totally wrong. The Next Generation just blew me away.

From VHS sleeve blurb ''At Manchester's late 88's early clocking we agreed to shoot, me 'n' mental genius Shaun Ryder, but like most other events of our lives filming started late. Four years late, Jan 93: what should've been the Happy Mondays is ove, X is sour. No band, no deal, no dollar. No film. Xcept: Didsbury, just off Barlow Moor, March 23rd. Jamming in X's 13' by 10' gaff, music addict Mr Ryder, brother Paul, ex, Ruthless Rap Assasin Kermit, Bez and drummer Ged line up ''Walking the Dog'' for a piss on the past. ''Kermit sounds shit'' says Paul. ''No, just out of key, I think it sounds great man'', says Shaun. It's Great When You're Straight later, now e's exclusively Stupid Stupid Stupid for you in the The Grape Tapes. Hang with Shaun and Black Grape round the world through 5 years of brown, pollinated, green-scripted, rattling, X-rated groovy gigs, kick-offs, trips, rock n roll works, riffs, licks and jellied bullshit in brass gouching ryhmes. Get higher with X, who takes a nine-bar just to sleep...''
06 August 2019 - Happy Mondays - Interview with Shaun Ryder by Richard Lewis from pennyblackmusic.co.uk published: 6 / 8 / 2019: The group’s recollections of their time in the studio are, it’s fair to say, hazy. With the extracurricular activity that was going on (the band prevented Hannett’s growing alcoholism by ensuring everyone in the studio was dosed up on Ecstasy), the schools programme was understandably far from VH1s sex n’ drugs n’ rehab ‘Behind the Music’ strand. “Oh God, yeah, there would’ve been all sorts filmed there!” Shaun replies. “My pal Tom Bruggen (Too Nice Tom) filmed the end of the Mondays and then the whole of everthing that happened in Black Grape and he’s got fucking loads and loads of stuff. And one of the things it’s all on different formats but I mean he’s fucking got all sorts. We’ll put together another ‘Grape Tapes’ one day”, referring to the band’s chaotic 1995-6 tour diary.
