1999

January 1999 - Happy Mondays reform
Notes: Black Grape and ex-Paris Angels guitarist joins the line up. Also an NME article noted a member of the band called 'Nuts' also joined?
From Ian Brown Interview from 1999 published in City Life Magazine 2000: “I’m not into these groups who get back together again just to get their egos stroked. I don’t need that.” Last year’s Happy Mondays reunion he forgives, however; “That was great because the fact that some of them were signing on was a disgrace. It wasn’t their fault that Factory went bust and they lost all the money. At the end of the day they deserve to get paid.”
06 February 1999 Saturday 00:02 The Independent article Paul McCann/Rhys Williams: "We'll put a show on, play some tunes, and hope it sounds good," said Mr Ryder yesterday. "Hopefully the tour will be rock and roll. If it turns into rock and Status Quo we'll have to finish it."
Shaun's brother, Paul Ryder, and the drummer, Gaz Whelan, are playing on the tour, and backing vocalist, Rowetta, is back. But the guitarist, Mark Day, and the keyboard player, Paul Davis, are no longer in the band. Crucially Mark "Bez" Berry, the band's non-singing, non-musical mascot, who merely walked around on stage with his hood up, will be joining the tour. Shaun Ryder claims Bez asked for pounds 50,000. "We got him down to pounds 500. Well, pounds 500 and a free T-shirt."

July 1999 - Shaun Ryder's bicycle was hit from behind by a car
Notes: Shaun was knocked off his bicycle by a car driven by Mr James Butler. The incident happened minutes after an argument between Shaun and James, 31, of Didsbury.
The trial finally took place a year later in July 2000, James was found not guilty.
The case was thrown out after Shaun told the judge he had been "on a bender" and thought the trial was listed for Thursday. Shaun's no show apparently cost the court £8000. "I would have fined him because of the seriousness of the matter but I don't have the power to do so," he said." He should be reprimanded for his conduct." Judge Anthony Ensor told the jury at Manchester Crown Court to deliver not guilty verdicts for assault and dangerous driving after Ryder said he could not be sure whether he had been hit by a car or had wobbled into it after a night out.
"I hadn't ridden a bike for a few years and I wasn't alert," he told the court. Ryder said he had been out drinking the night before and had only had a few hours sleep when he took to the road. "No jury could rely on evidence given by Mr Ryder as his recollection of the events was uncertain," he said. Ryder apologised to the court and said he had been mistaken about his dates.
"I had been in Manchester and I had left my mobile phone in a hotel so I was out of contact with my manager," he told the court. "We had just released a single and we were out for a celebration." Judge Ensor asked why the court was told that Ryder had left his house at 0930 BST on Wednesday. Ryder replied: "I was on a bender." Outside court, Ryder declined to comment, but James Butler said: "To be quite truthful I didn't think anything would come of it other than what happened."

1999 - Bez is involved in a motorbike accident.
Notes: Bez suffers a near fatal motorbike crash. Whilst in hospital he picks up a superbug that causes him to put into a coma for a month.
07 November 2022 - The Big Issue Bez Interview: I had a really bad motorbike accident [in 1999], then I picked up a hospital superbug that nearly killed me. I was in a coma for a month. And then when I came out of my coma, there were a lot of touch-and-go moments. It completely changed my whole attitude to life. I stopped being as miserable, and started living life to the fullest, because when you realise life can be taken away at any moment you realise there’s no point in dwelling on negative shit. What worried me most that whole time in hospital was, I had to tell the people who mattered the most that I loved them. So now every time I go out the door, I tell my loved ones I love them. So if I die the last thing they’ll remember is me saying I love them. Because I never used to say it, ever. I grew up in a family where saying you loved each other was a bit fucking soft.

A review by David Crookes featured in 17 July 2000 Monday - Bolton Evening News: Oasis In Concert Souvenir Special Edition (Newspaper Returns Due 29/7/00).
From Stuart Fletcher interview by Matt Mead published 11 February 2019:
Paul Ryder was unavailable at the time to do the Happy Mondays gigs lined up afterwards so I was asked to step in. I ended up doing all the Oasis supports in the UK in 2000 for the Be Here Now tour and Glastonbury mainstage with Bowie. I ended up walking off with Bowie’s lighter after that gig, off my face. They are great guys and I loved every minute of that tour, what I can remember anyway. Kinky Afro was one of my fave tunes as a kid. Following this I went on to tour America with St Etienne which was a massive culture shock after the Mondays...
From 28 June 2023 Clash Music Website: “Andy’s great as well, and what’s funny is I haven’t met Andy Bell since over 20 years ago, and me and Andy started off on the wrong foot! The Mondays were supporting Oasis at Bolton Wanderers football ground in the early 2000s, and Andy walked into an argument, and I walked into an argument, and somebody in our firm was arguing with somebody Andy was connected to, and he had to take his side and I had to take our side, and then I never saw him again for over 22 years or something! Never met again until we both met with Zak, and what a great guy he is!”

2001 - Shaun Ryder watches Star Wars again with son Ollie & daughters Pearl & Lulu
From What Planet Am I On? by Shaun Ryder Book:
So I’m not one of those nerds on space, those sci-fi nuts who just love everything. When the Star Wars prequels came out in the noughties, with Ewan McGregor and Samuel L Jackson in them, I tried watching them, but I still wasn’t having it. Ollie, one of our kids, was a teenager then, and he had all the Star Wars figures and was bang into it, so I thought I would give it another go, but nah. It’s just not my scene.

From What Planet Am I On? by Shaun Ryder Book: I think a lot of people know that I saw a UFO when I was younger, particularly as it was featured in the film 24 Hour Party People – although it was portrayed very differently in the film to how it happened in real life. Not that anyone should believe what happens in that film. I liked 24 Hour Party People, I thought it was a good film, but it’s a film; that’s not me. That’s not a documentary about my life. The Shaun Ryder in the film is a caricature. It amazes me how people just swallow everything whole.

Inspiral Carpets - Greatest Hits Tour - 06 December 2003 - Apollo, Manchester * Support Act(s): Puressence
Notes: Sold out show. The original support band was The Caesars, another organ driven band hailing from Sweden, but they pulled out of the tour and Puressence stepped in to support. I was there with my dad. It felt like something was happening in Manchester at the time, a revival of the 'Madchester' scene. Probably because everyone who lived through it was having a mid-life crisis and wanted to relive their youth. The show was a sell out and had been since the tickets went on sale. This was the days before the smoking ban so the show was already consumed with fog before the support band came on. The sound was loud and proud. Fans held up banners welcoming the band home and everyone was mooing the hits. The big suprise was Happy Mondays star Shaun William Ryder appearing onstage with the band. The crowd went wild. Shaun came on during Commercial Rain and sang along with the band. He threw in new lyrics and even led the band into a medly of 24 Hour Party People. Shaun stayed onstage during This Is How It Feels and questioned the crowd why they were booing him, even though the sound was the carpets signature moo!. A great show. Watch the BBC3 Shaun Ryder documentary for footage from the show too.
