Bobby Gillespie was there and remembers “I witnessed a session at Abbey Rd in 1997 for a Dr John album where his record company had assembled a bunch of young indie Brit musicians where Mac Rebenac (Dr John) seemed bored and uninterested in the session until Martin started playing, then suddenly the good Dr started knocking some funky piano chops and I instantly knew it was because his ears had pricked up when he heard Martin play and the session at last came alive.”

From September - October 1999 - On Target Magazine, Mani Interview: Is the next album in a similar vein to Vanishing Point because Echo Dek was more dub?
"Yeah Adrian Sherwood got to work on that (Echo Dek) because we're all big reggae fans, even from the days of fuckin' rudeboy Trojan gear an' all that man. Being a punk taught me a lot about music because we used to go to the Russell Club to watch gigs and the people who were there would be Punks or Rastas like outcasts. It's funny how Punks n' Rastas always fuckin' got on with each other and we learnt about reggae from them and that follows through to your tunes...

From the scottishsun.co.uk, 03 June 2021 20:53, article by David Meikle: 'SHAME ON ME' Stone Roses’ Mani got so drunk before Glasgow gig he ‘couldn’t stand’ & his ‘c***’ live show needed re-recorded.
STONE Roses legend Mani has revealed he got so drunk before playing a gig with Primal Scream in Glasgow he was forced to re-record a live radio show on his own. Mani, bass player with the iconic Manchester band, had been downing whisky in Baird’s Bar before a show at the iconic Barrowlands venue with the Scots rockers. The 58-year-old, real name Gary Mounfield, had joined the Loaded stars after the Stone Roses had split up.
And he has told how one of his first gigs with the hard-living outfit resulted in a below par performance. He said: “There have been certain gigs at the Barras where I could not bloody stand up. “I’d been in Baird’s bar next door firing whisky into me. I couldn’t stand, man. “My first gig in Glasgow with the Scream and it was being recorded for some BBC radio show. “So subsequently I was that crap I had to go back to the BBC studios and re-record it on my own with all the lads laughing at me through the glass as I played along with a backing track. “Shame on me.”
Mani also told Brian McClair's podcast, Life With Brian, how he had played football alongside Liam Gallagher but joked brother Noel had ‘three left feet'. He also told how the use of Stone Roses song 'This is the One' at Old Trafford had helped swell band mates Ian Brown and John Squire's bank accounts. He added: "Everytime the team comes out, they come out to 'This is the One' and I always think 'there's another 37-and-a-half pence going into Squire and Brown's pocket.”

June 1998 - Mani Interview features in United We Stand (Manchester United Fanzine) Magazine
June 1998 - United We Stand Interview
Mani Interview: Ask…ask…ask…ask…ask…ask…ask…MANI
A familiar face at United's European away games, Gary 'Mani' Mounfield has been a red since birth. Mani made his name as the bass player in the seminal Stone Roses before transferring to Primal Scream when the Roses split in '95. Along with Old Trafford's own terrace songster, Peter Boyle, UWS went round to Mani's gaff to drown out our European sorrows by watching Juventus hammer Monaco and chew the fat over all things United.
So Mani, tell us a bit about yourself…"I'm 35 years of age but getting away with acting much younger. I'm a North Manchester boy, originally from Moston but I moved to Failsworth and Newton Heath in my early teens and I still go up there for a beer because that's where all my mates are.
Other than that, I'm proud to be Manc, proud to be red. My dad was a mad United fan. Nobby Stiles is part of my family - my aunties cousin or something like that and I was born to be a red. I would have had my ears boxed in if I'd dared to be a blue. As for school, I went to Xervarian and after there I tried my hardest not to get a job and sat in my bedroom learning to play a guitar, going abroad with the scals, doing a bit of this and that, getting nice trainers and that. I very nearly caught the ferry to Holland which kicked off with West Ham in 1986 but ended up catching a later ferry which was full of Everton. I had to keep my trap shut but I still made it to the Dam along with about a hundred others. I used to go to away games all the time with a lot of those heads from Salford. I can remember going to Luton when we were on that ten game winning streak in '85. We met up at Salford Crescent, got in a van and went down to terrorise St Albans for the day. It's only in the past few years that I've had to cut down on going home and away because my two bands have been busy. That's me…"
How did you involvement with the Roses come about? "I'd been in a few bands previously including a punk band from Failsworth called Urban Paranoia who used to play at the youth club and all that. I knew from the age of eight that I wanted to be in a band, I was never good enough to be a footballer and I'm lucky that I make a living out of music.
As for the Roses, well, I was working at the Opera House in 1987 and went walking up to the Palace Theatre one dinner time. As I walked up I bumped into John Squire and Reni going to put an advert up for a bass player for their new band. I told them to rip up the advert and stacked my job in that afternoon which was a good thing because I'm quite work shy. I had two weeks to learn fourteen tunes: Adored, She Bangs The Drums and all that. Throughout my time in the Stone Roses I never had time to sit back and enjoy what we were doing. The Roses just snowballed but it beat the shit out of going abroad robbing for a living."
What were the highlights? "There were loads. We once played in front of three people in Cardiff and played a blinding gig. Another time, we played a gig just before Spike Island in St Helens under an assumed name. There were about five people there and we just sat down and played another blinding gig. I enjoyed moments like that as much as I enjoyed Spike Island where there was 25,000."
What was Spike Island like? "It was a weird one because I'd sorted our kid out with about three hundred tickets for his mates but on the day of the concert I just paced around the flat all day giffin for a spliff until I was picked up about half eight at night. Spike Island was probably the first truly straight gig that we'd done but it was good to see that many people there because we'd taken a real chance putting the gig on and it cost a lot of money. It wasn't a particularly great gig but it was a good coming together of people."
What was your favourite Roses song? "This Is The One."
What did you do between the two albums? "We had three lazy years in Manchester, I ended up living in Monmouth, South Wales for two years. Met a bird, had a kid. I liked the second album. Too many people expected it to be like the first album and I know we got all Led Zeppelin-ish but I liked that. We did some good gigs in Manc on the back of that album at the Apollo. I think that gig will come out as a live album because our record company are still owed some money from us. The Apollo concerts were the best because you always get a good crowd in Manc. Them cockneys will just stand there and look what you're wearing. They can't even look you in the eye, they're all paranoid."
When did you start going to the match? "When I was a kid. I used to get the number seven bus from Failsworth which used to drop you by the swing bridge. It cost 50p to go in the Stretford End and I used to take our Greg, sit him at the front on a barrier, give him his wagon wheel and crisps and all that and then watch the match. When we were old enough we used to get the specials through the 70's and 80's. I didn't miss many matches."
How many games do you get to now? "You know something, I'm embarrassed to say that I've hardly been in the past couple of years because I've been in the studio so much. I had three league match tickets books in the North Stand but John Squire's got them now."
Most embarrassing moment at a match? "I got caught spitting on the tele by my mam at a United v Leeds game. She was disgusted and said, 'there's nothing big or clever about spitting young Gary'."
Childhood hero? "It's Georgie innit? My mam and dad were mates with him. I can remember waking up the morning and him being downstairs in my house after having a late drink when he shouldn't have been. I really had a thing for Gordon Hill too. Those were the days for me: Admiral shirts, Stepney, Nicol, Houston, Buchan, Albiston, Daly, Macari, Coppell, Pearson and the Greenhoffs. Good days going to United. I'm all for terracing coming back."
Bumped into many Mancs on your travels? "That's the in-joke with the Scream now. 'Wherever Mounfield goes he always bumps into Mancs and Scousers.' To be fair to the Scousers, despite all that shit in the 80's we're very similar."
You've been a familiar face on Euro aways… "Usually pissed. I enjoyed Porto and Dortmund. We got a freebie to Dortmund because me and Bobby Gillespie did our German press over there. Bobby is Celtic but United are his second team. A few of the lads in the band are United. That sing-up in Dortmund was one of the best that I've ever seen. James Brown and all that. It should be like that every week."
Are we good enough to win the European Cup? "We need a couple of shrewd buys but we're dangerously close and I think we're going to see it in our life time. I think our Pally's getting close to the end of his career so we need someone to partner Johnsen at the back. I reckon we need a good creative midfielder as well. I reckon Fergie did the right thing by sticking with Coley rather than being held to ransom over Salas. You don't want to end up with a team of big heads where the other players are pulling their face because so and so is on X amount more. I think Fergie's got it right but injuries haven't helped. I feel sorry for people like Jordi who are always injured. I don't know about Sheringham. He's good at what he does but I don't know whether he's United. Hindsight is wonderful but the boss knows what he's doing doesn't he?"
A lot of United fans were big Roses fans… "I've always seen people at United who I've seen at our gigs. It's good that United fans have seen us at the match too because it hasn't been a case of, 'look at that pop star knob in his ivory tower'. I'd die without United. Everywhere I've been in the world I'd do anything I could to watch United. I've been up at 7 o'clock in the morning in Santa Monica to watch United and walked into a bar which is full of Mancs. It ain't the same on the tele though and I miss the match. I'll start going again once the touring is out of the way with John."
Have you seen any of the players at your gigs? "Most footballers are into Lionel Richie and Luther Van Dross so it's good when you see someone like Brian [McClair] coming to the gigs. He knows his music and he knows his politics. That's why Fergie wants him there. He's a good socialist."
Boyle: "He's a Glaswegian. Glaswegians and Scousers stick together. I used to hate the football teams in Liverpool but really admire the people because of the way they stuck together. Look at the Dockers in Liverpool. They just didn't back down. People like the N.M.E. supported the dockers because it was a trendy thing to do but they were United in their cause."
What did you make of Ian Brown's album? "Some of it's very good. Some of it's a little bit sketchy. Ian knows what he's doing and good luck to him. At times he's the most lucid and intelligent guy but other times he can be a right twat. Everyone's like that though aren't they? Ian's a genuine guy and very strong minded. I think Ian felt let down by John because they had been such good mates since they'd been kids but it had to be done because the Roses were finished. They'll bury the hatchet one day I'm sure."
Current musical influence, Boylie's 'Songs from the Bathtub?' "Boylie's tapes are right after a few beers. Asian Dub Foundation are doing it for me at the minute, as are Puressence from Failsworth. Another Manchester band will come up from nowhere this year, it always happens."
Did the Roses do a George Best and throw it all away? "In a way we did. That court case changed things and we were all victims of our own circumstances because there was too much court gear. If we would have been left alone to record we would have been fine but then we knew we were going to get a load of shit when we signed the crap record deal with Silvertone in the first place. I wouldn't have done anything differently though because I'm just happy to have come out of it and into the Scream."
How did that move come about? "I kidnapped Bobby Gillespie on the last night of the Roses tour. I'd known him for years from doing E's at clubs in London and he was buzzing for it. That was a year and a half before the split. The Scream are a good band to be with because they don't change their beliefs for nobody. They can be mad on tour but I can hold my own with the best of them, don't worry about me."
Future ambitions? "For United to win the domestic treble and the European Cup in one year. Manchester to become a principality, enter United into the World Cup and win it. Professionally I just want to make music and be happy."

From September - October 1999 - On Target Magazine, Mani Interview: Have you spoken to Ian Brown recently? "Last time I seen Ian was about this time last year at the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan, he was on before us and we had a little bit of a falling out over something and nothing but we're mates, you know what I mean? He's been a busy boy, I've been a busy boy - when we meet up with each other it'll be business as usual - I want him to get another scooter so we can get the old gang back together!"
