24 April 2013 - Drowned In Sound web article by Dom Gourlay, Bobby Interview:
DiS: Has fatherhood changed you in any way? Bobby Gillespie: Yeah, I guess I've had to grow up a bit. When you're an artist or in a band you don't need to grow up. You can indulge and basically get away with murder. You have no real responsibilities, nothing to worry about. Whereas when you have kids you've really got to get your shit together and start being responsible. But I don't think that should affect your art or your attitude to rock and roll. The hard bit is trying to balance family life with being part of a world touring rock and roll band. Anyway, I think I've worked out how to do it now!

For the complete article, see Media. 01 November 2003 Saturday 01.12 GMT - The Observer, Guardian, Ben Marshall Interview: ...Now though, apparently, they have calmed down. We meet at Heathrow airport, just after 9am. Duff is buying a pint of Fosters. He says that he's gone off the really strong lager. "The alcoholic equivalent of moving from smack to coke," says Bobby with a snigger. Duff had spent the preceding halfhour trying to buy the new novel by JG Ballard. "No joy," he informs us with a shrug. "It's cos the novel begins with some people blowing up Heathrow airport," says Andrew Innes with uncharacteristic sensitivity. "It's only fucking fiction," says Duff. Perhaps it's the beer or their gang-tight cohesion but the Primals seem entirely unfazed by the demands of the day. Supporting the Rolling Stones, the world's biggest and longest lasting rock'n'roll band, would unnerve most people. "Why be daunted?" demands Bobby with a rhetorical wave of the hands. "They're a great rock'n'roll band. We're a great rock'n'roll band."...On stage in front of 30,000 dope-smoking Spaniards, the sheer urgency, aggression and bluesy simplicity of songs like Rocks and Jailbird pack a savage punch. Oddly it is also easier to see the logical trajectory of the Primals' career when these songs are parenthesised by the older (Higher Than The Sun) and the newer (Swastika Eyes)...So I suspect did the rest of the band, if Mani's meeting with Mick Jagger was anything to go by. Mick was very graciously doing his meet'n'greet rock'n'roll royalty bit. He shook hands, patted backs and complimented the Primals on a "great fucking show". Mani, who on stage had thanked the Stones before adding that they had much to learn from the Primals, shook Mick's hand and then began doing a weird Bo Selecta imitation of the great man. Mick looked utterly bewildered, Mani adding, to Mick's exponential bafflement, "You make me want to do a sex wee." "That's Mani," says Bobby. "He says what he thinks."

From The Independent (independent.co.uk) 07 November 2003 01:00 Friday by Steve Jelbert: The most impressive thing about Dirty Hits is just how well it hangs together, despite its almost insanely eclectic styles, from balladry to grubby electronica. Were you surprised? "Kind of, but most of those songs were in our live set. We tried to sequence it in a couple of ways, but the chronological one works best," says Gillespie. "There's no irony in what we did. Other bands distanced themselves emotionally. I guess that's why the records are still good. Because we meant it."

Notes: Apparently Bobby Gillespie named his second son Lux after Lux Interior, the singer of horror rockers the Cramps.
24 April 2013 - Drowned In Sound web article by Dom Gourlay, Bobby Interview: DiS: Your youngest son Lux is a pretty good drummer by all accounts? Bobby Gillespie: He is yeah, something of a natural talent. He's way better than me, but then again most people probably are! Nah, he's good, really good in fact. He finds it quite easy. He's got a great sense of rhythm, he's really steady with his timing and also has a good understanding of song structure. He's still only eight. He just started last year and picked it up straight away.

Notes: Carl attempted to play drums on A Man Needs To Be Told.
From NME Article: Carl Barat has formed a 'supergroup' with members of The Charlatans, Razorlight and Primal Scream — and they played their first ever gig last week, NME can reveal. Carl recently signalled he was planning to split The Libertines at the end of the year, telling NME that he was taking the band off the road for the "foreseeable future". Barat has to have an operation and with Pete Doherty now seemingly out of the band for good, and Babyshambles going from strength to strength, Carl is looking to the future.
For his first venture outside of the Libs, he roped in some old friends to form The Chavs for a festive night of music. Featuring Charlatans singer Tim Burgess, Razorlight drummer Andy Burrows and Primal Scream keyboardist Martin Duffy, the band played a combination of Burgess penned Charlatans hits and solo material, Libertines songs, and a cover of the Christmas classic 'Fairytale Of New York' which ended with Carl and Tim collapsed in a heap, hugging each other.
Carl and Tim shared the vocals, with Barät even trying his hand at drumming on a ramshackle version of The Charlatans' 'A Man Needs To Be Told',
Speaking about how the band came together, Carl told NME: "Tim looked after me in LA. Tim phones me up and said 'Is it alright if Duffy plays?' I remember that (drummer) Andy (Burrows) was a big Charlies fan and I said, 'Could he join?' And there was a glint in his welling eye. He's the loveliest fella,"
Rehearsals for the gig were chaotic, taking place in a café. Carl continued: "Until today I never knew any of the songs... 'North Country Boy', I probably played more like a 'North Cunt Boy'. We couldn't get a rehearsal space so we had to do it in a café for 15 minutes."
The show took place at the Tap'n'Tin in Chatham, Kent, the venue made legendary for the gig The Libertines played on the night Pete got out of prison for burgling Carl's flat. Carl said that the show had inspired the name of the band. He revealed: "Duffy wanted to call the band The Chilblains. Tim preferred The Overcoats in a rambling northern fashion (laughs). But in my despair, heavy of heart and belly I recalled the history and Dickensian forces of Arcadia and recalled Chatham had a scar on my chin, courtesy of the 'freedom Gig'. I remembered that 'chav' is that word whose birth and roots are in this very place (Chatham) 90 years ago where we are standing. So tonight we were The Chavs. We proceeded to trudge and bounce through a glorious set. But essentially it was a good old Christmas knees-up."

20 January 2004 Tuesday 12.23 GMT - The Observer, Guardian, Dave Simpson review: Primal Scream Apollo, Manchester. Primal Scream have long been the masters of reinvention, changing from jangly popsters to leather-clad rockers to - with 1991's Screamadelica - purveyors of some of the finest rock-dance fusions ever. After two decades, they seem at something of a crossroads. Their last single, a misguided version of Some Velvet Morning with Kate Moss helping out on vocals, disappeared without trace. Further ominous signs appeared with a recent "summing up" greatest hits album and a grudging Brit nomination for best rock act. For a band like the Scream (who once won a Mercury prize and managed to lose both the award and the cheque following the ceremony), this must feel like the industry equivalent of awarding a gold watch. However, any suspicions that Bobby Gillespie's band are limbering up for retirement are dispelled by what must rank alongside the all-time classic Primals gigs. From the moment bassist Gary "Mani" Mounfield announces, "We're feeling twisted because we've been partying hard for a few days," the gauntlet is hurled down, followed by 90 minutes of edgy, white-hot entertainment. Although the set flicks through their back pages - a riotous Rocks here, a taut Kowalski there - it doesn't feel like a show of old hits, because the chameleons are now able to remodel their own songs. Swastika Eyes is unfurled against a backdrop of red light and white noise. Everywhere, songs are blasted out without pause and littered with sonic subversions and electronic trickery. Mounfield's joining has revived Primal Scream into an experimental unit, the modern Public Image Limited or Can. But Gillespie, the rebel's pin-up, remains the leader of rock's last real gang in town. Here he is on enigmatic form, dipping into Love Spreads by the Stone Roses (Mounfield's old band), sitting out a darker version of the old ecstasy anthem Loaded and leading Movin' On Up into a celebration of survival. The best British rock act gong would find no better home - even though, on past record, it would probably end up in the Thames.

Notes: Bobby walked on stage and greeted fans with "Ziggy played guitar,"
Poster noted 'Standing In Stalls'
From 27 January 2004 01:00 Tuesday - The Independent (independent.co.uk), Kevin Harley review: Primal Scream, Apollo, Hammersmith, London. Gillespie's rock'n'roll triumph.
It's no secret that Bobby Gillespie's mind is addled with rock'n'roll history. Obviously, then, the significance of the venue he's playing in tonight is not going to be lost on the straggly, laser-eyed Primal Scream front man. "Ziggy played guitar," he croons by way of greeting (in his Mark E Smith slur, though, it's more "gitahhhh"), as a reminder that this is where David Bowie put his Ziggy Stardust alter ego to bed just over 30 years ago. The question is, then, could one of British rock music's most reliably virile bands be about to make history themselves, by calling curtains on their career in the same spot? Well, the signs are there. The release of singles collections recently signalled the end for two other great British groups, Pulp and Suede, and the Scream are touring on the back of their own retrospective, Dirty Hits. What's more, their latest single, a cover of Lee Hazlewood's "Some Velvet Morning" featuring Kate Moss on co-crooning duties, might be their weakest yet. They've kept ahead of the game since making the classic rock-on-MDMA Screamadelica album in 1991, but you have to wonder whether it's time for the Scream's considerable head of steam to finally dissipate.
So, how long does it take for them to nix any such nightmarish thoughts tonight? Oh, about a minute. They kick in hard and fast with the punk-ish "Accelerator" and the rapid-fire, electro-pop one-two of "Miss Lucifer", Gillespie's echo-laden exhortations to "Shake it, baby" on the latter met with much shaking, baby. By the fourth song, "Shoot Speed/Kill Light", with a lively looking Gillespie slapping front-row flesh, and the former Stone Roses bassist Mani Mounfield punching the air, it's clear that the band are on full throttle and then some. They're all 40-ish, sure, but alongside the White Stripes, they deliver as enthralling a re-assertion of rock fundamentals as any that you're likely to see live right now. Initially eschewing an obvious run-through of hits, the set is largely focused on their career kick-starter from 2000, the wired and fractious Xtrmntr album, and its follow-up, 2002's under-rated Evil Heat. It's a similar set to the one they've been playing for the past three years, sure, but there's no way the band seem tired of the songs. The mantra-like "Rise" and garage-fired skit on "Suffragette City", "Sick City", are spat out with venom and vigour, Mani's bass making its chest-rattling presence firmly felt on the former. Thankfully, too, they've dropped "Pills" (Gillespie's unfortunate attempt at rapping) from the show and replaced it with the far better "Exterminator", in which fidgety electronica and brutal bass abuse coil snakily around Gillespie's protest-rock rants about "civil disobedience". Taken on its own, Gillespie's fascination with the relationship of rock'n'roll to notions of outlaw cool seem a little dozy. In context, though, the sheer urgency of this gig vindicates him, particularly on the home stretch of a corrosive "Kowalski" and the Donna Summer-influenced electro tantrum of "Swastika Eyes". Mixed with banks of lights, a huge sound and a none-more-tight band, Gillespie's immersion in his performance packs a wallop. The sheer diversity of the set, too, amplifies the man's passion for rock music in all its capacity to agitate and excite. From the stealthy dub-psychedelia of Vanishing Point's "Burning Wheel", to the Stonesy lollop of "Jailbird" and the electro-funk rumble of Xtrmntr's "Kill All Hippies", the set bustles with more energy and ideas than most bands half the age of Primal Scream can muster. By the time Screamadelica's rave-rock classics, "Movin on Up" and "Loaded", swagger into ear shot, they've pretty much pulled off a blinder. Band and audience put it all into partying like it's 1992, enough to make this feel more like a definitive, of-the-moment Scream gig than a nostalgia trip. As for what the future holds, they gave nothing away. For now, though, tonight played less like a rock'n'roll suicide than the finest show in town.

25 January 2004 - News Of The World publish "It Moss be Love"
Notes: The newspaper ran a story which wrongly claimed that Kate Moss was comforting Bobby Gillespie after a supposed split with his fiancee. They published a photograph of the two together, the photo looks like they are holding hands. In the photo Kate Moss is positioned in front of Bobby and although long lenses can shrink distance, upon closer inspection it is possible to see that Gilliespie is holding hands with someone who was standing behind Kate - although this person appears to have been airbrushed out completely. The News Of The World deny that any photos had been tampered with.
Bobby and Kate sued the Newspaper and News Of The World were forced to pay damages to Bobby in July 2004.
03 February 2004 Tuesday 17.39 GMT The Guardian, Claire Cozens, press and publishing correspondent article:
The News of the World has angrily hit out at claims that it published a doctored photograph of Kate Moss and the Primal Scream singer Bobby Gillespie. Moss's lawyer, Gerrard Tyrrell, wrote to the paper last week to object to an article headlined It Moss be Love, in which it claimed the supermodel was "comforting" Gillespie after he broke up with his girlfriend.
Beside the article was a photograph of the pair, which Mr Tyrrell questioned because it did not show Gillespie's girlfriend Katie England, who was standing beside him and holding his hand at the time.
Mr Tyrrell also denied the pair were a couple, or that Gillespie had split up with Ms England. But today the News of the World and the Matrix picture agency, which provided the photograph, insisted it had not been altered. "The allegation that the News of the World faked this photo is untrue. The photo was obtained from a reputable picture agency and was not airbrushed or doctored in any way," said the paper. "We are surprised by Gerrard Tyrrell's comments. Rav Singh put the quotes contained in the article to him on the day prior to publication. He made no objection and added: 'Bobby [Gillespie] is nothing to do with us. He is a big boy.'" Matrix said Ms England's face could have been in shadows or obscured because she was bending it downwards.
29 July 2004 Thursday 11.53 BST - The Guardian, Claire Cozens, press and publishing correspondent article: News of the World. News of World pays damages to Primal Scream singer. The News of the World has been forced to apologise and pay damages to Primal Scream frontman Bobby Gillespie over an article suggesting he had an affair with Kate Moss. The newspaper today apologised for the "distress and injury" caused to Gillespie and his long-term partner Katy England and agreed not to repeat the allegations.
"The claimants are in fact happily engaged and living together. The claimants are both good and longstanding friends of Kate Moss and are both godparents to her daughter," said their solicitor, Gerrard Tyrrell.
The article, which appeared on January 25, was headlined "It Moss be Love" and wrongly claimed that the model was comforting Gillespie after a supposed split with his fiancee. Mr Tyrrell said the photograph accompanying the article had given the impression that the photographer had caught Gillespie - who has not split from his fiancee - and Moss alone and holding hands.
In fact, he said that at the time the photograph was taken Gillespie and England were holding hands, while Moss walked in front of the pair. However, readers would have been oblivious to England's presence because she was obscured by Moss, who was to the fore of the picture. The Press Complaints Commission code specifically bans newspapers from publishing "inaccurate, misleading or distorted material, including pictures". The News of the World said it acknowledged the allegations were wrong and agreed to pay damages and legal costs to Gillespie and Ms England.

Kevin Shields: 'Britpop was pushed by the government'. My Bloody Valentine leader raises possibility the mid-90s pop movement was part of an establishment conspiracy. Shields also said the time he spent with Primal Scream – he toured with them between 1999 and 2006 – was a bit of a blur. "I was terrible in my 30s," he said. "I did some silly, crazy things. That's when I really went for it in every respect. Taking drugs recreationally – lots of them. So it's all very hazy and jumbled up. I can remember the beginning and the last few gigs with Primal Scream but everything else is interchangeable. "I once took down the name of every single member of staff on an aeroplane because I was so fucking drunk. I found this illegible piece of paper in my pocket the next day and couldn't work out what it was. I'd blacked out. But now I'm a more convivial drinker, I don't get really drunk."

From 07 July 2013 08:34 walesonline.co.uk By David Owens:
The first meeting between the trio was at the Benicassim Festival in Spain where Mani was, at that time, still playing with Primal Scream – and as get-togethers go it couldn’t have gone much better. Everyone got on famously and Mani invited Steve to watch from the side of the stage as the band put on a fantastic show. “It hit me in Benicassim when I was stood at the side of the stage just how famous Mani is,” says Steve. “There were 50,000 people chanting his name. After the gig he presented me with the drum skins off the drum kit which he had got the band to sign for me.
“I remember what Mani said when we were parting after that first meeting,” he adds. “We hugged each other and I thanked him for a brilliant weekend and said sorry it’s coming to an end. He said ‘it’s not the end, it’s just the beginning’." True to his word the Mancunian music icon has been a constant in Steve’s life since that first meeting, giving him an insight into the life of his late father, and also allowing him to witness some great moments in music history...

Download (bignoisemusic.com)
Notes: Proposed release in aid of people driven from their homes by the violence in the Darfur region of Sudan. All the artists and record labels donating tracks to the album are forgoing their royalties, and each album purchased will pay for clean drinking water for 15 people. The record cost £7.99, of which only £5 went to the appeal.
03 September 2004 Friday 10.43 BST - The Observer, Guardian, Sam Jones article: A hastily-assembled collective of bands including REM, Ash and Primal Scream is to release an album in aid of the hundreds of thousands driven from their homes by the violence in the Darfur region of Sudan. Among the other acts who have donated exclusive tracks to Oxfam's Songs for Sudan album, which is released today, are Badly Drawn Boy, Roots Manuva and Faithless. "Men, women, and children are still dying every day in Sudan," said Badly Drawn Boy, aka Damon Gough. "People like us might not have the power to stop the violence, but at least we can try to help the people affected by it. Oxfam is already saving lives, the least we can do is help them to save more." Ash's Tim Wheeler urged people to buy the album, which can be downloaded at www.bignoisemusic.com He said: "Downloading from the Oxfam site equates to filling a well in Sudan full of fresh clean drinking water." The artist Mr Scruff, another contributor, said: "It is unacceptable that the people of Darfur are forced to live in such inhumane conditions. Hopefully the money will go some way towards improving the situation."
More than 1.2 million people were forced to flee their homes after Arab militias known as the Janjaweed swept through Darfur, resulting in an estimated 50,000 deaths. The Sudanese government stands accused of backing the Janjaweed so as to put down black African rebel groups that took up arms in 2003. All the artists and record labels donating tracks to the album are forgoing their royalties, and each album purchased will pay for clean drinking water for 15 people. The record costs £7.99, of which £5 will go to the appeal.

2005 - Riot City Blues Recording Sessions
From The Guardian Sunday 23 April 2006 15.06 BST article by James Brown:
Bobby said: 'We were recording with [the producer] Youth in the studio and he mentioned he did yoga and explained how it worked for him. How it clears all the rubbish from your head and gives you a way to escape the negative moments... apparently.'
I tell him I particularly like a killer track on the new album called 'Suicide Sally and Johnny Guitar', which depicts the hollow culture of self-abuse that follows in fame's slipstream.
'Yes, that's my favourite,' he says. 'But it's also about plastic surgery and people who hate the way they are and I did know a bloke called George who blew his brains out, and I do know Sally. It's a rock'n'roll song but there's no moral to it. It's just what it is.'
'When the Bomb Drops' is another song I like, I say, real evil psychedelia, malevolent music. 'You know even when we were doing the electronic music on the last album, when we were trying to reconstruct the songs, we were totally different live, with sheets of noise - very hard and heavy rock. This album is more traditional. It's in the spirit of Creedence Clearwater Revival, Jerry Lee Lewis and Gene Vincent. I'd also call bits of it Scots-Irish music. Innes has played the mandolin on it and there's fiddle from Warren Ellis, who plays with the Bad Seeds. Come down to rehearsals next week and you'll hear it all live.'

2005 - Riot City Blues Recording Sessions
From BBC Interview 26 June 2005 - Glastonbury Festival, Bobby said 'We've recorded 13 new songs' and Mani added 'in 4 and a half days' 'It sounds garage, it sounds if you can imagine what spam sounds like..' Bobby spoke up 'Funkadelic'. Mani 'Since Exterminator, for me, it's the most enjoyable LP we've ever made. Everyone has been laughing and grinning like an idiot. It's been like one or two takes.'

Debut performance of Suicide Sally, Johnny Guitar.
During the set Bobby insults the crowd with a Nazi salute. He later claimed he did it because a hippy stole his ale.
Before launching into Rise, Bobby shouts 'We're giving you bad vibrations' as Brian Wilson played the show. Mani shared an anecdote during the pre-show interview Mani 'We met Brian Wilson in Sao Paulo in February in Brazil and y'know what he said to me? I went 'alright Brian' and he went to me 'Who are you? Security!'.
Before Alright, Mani asks 'Is anyone here from Chippenham?'.
Mani teases the crowd with The Stone Roses I Wanna Be Adored bassline, Bobby interupts him "Do you want to hear the Stone Roses?" To the crowd's enthusiastic reply, he responds, "Well you should have been here 15 years ago, you fucking lazy bastards."
A security guard escorts Bobby off stage, but not before he's thrown his microphone into the crowd.
Mani & Bobby were interviewed by Colin & Edith before the gig, it was broadcast live on BBC. The BBC had to apologise to viewers for the bad language, as the interview took place before the U.K. 21:00 watershed. During the interview Edith said: You two should have your own tele show. Bobby sings 'Hey, hey we're the junkies. People say we're jabbing around, we're too busy shooting, to let anybody down'
Mani said 'I'm going to see Ian Brown...Ian Brown might invite me onstage to ruin one of my songs again'. Bobby said 'I'm going to see Ian Brown, because I love Ian Brown ' Mani added 'Absolutley, he's the king monkey'.
Ian Brown was headlining The Other Stage.
24 April 2013 - Drowned In Sound web article by Dom Gourlay, Bobby Interview: DiS: DiS: People still talk about Glastonbury 2005 when Mani played the introduction to 'I Wanna Be Adored' and you asked the crowd if they wanted to hear The Stone Roses before telling them they should have been here fifteen years ago. Are you looking forward to playing there again this year? Bobby Gillespie: Did I say that? Did I say The Stone Roses? Really? Oh, I must have. But yeah, we're really looking forward to going back there this year.
