1993
1993 - Tom Dowd is asked to produce the new LP at Ardent Studios.
Notes: Tom Dowd passed away in October 2002.
Notes: From 2018 - Give Out But Don't Give Up - The Original Memphis Recordings: It was Joe McEwan, a fellow soul obsessive and then vice-president of Sire Records, who suggested Dowd as a possible producer...
Dowd occupies a singularly elevated position, having worked as a visionary recording engineer on groundbreaking records by the likes of Ray Charles, Charlie Parker and John Coltrane before shaping the legendary Atlantic soul sound of the sixties alongside the great Jerry Wexler. Dowd's sophisticated signature is stamped on countless hit singles, including classics like Otis Redding's 'I've Been Loving You Too Long' and Aretha Franklin's 'I Never Loved A Man the Way I Loved You', as well as albums as disparate as Dusty in Memphis and Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. And, he had produced Atlantic Crossing, arguably the last of the of great Rod Stewart albums that had soundtracked the teenage of Bobby Gillespie and Andrew Innes. Put simply, Tom Dowd helped shape the course of post-war pop music. "Understandably, I was very nervous talking to him initially," recalls Gillespie, "And, to be honest, he was a bit reticent at first. He had listened to Screamadclica and he wasn't really sure why we wanted to work with him."

1993 - Muscle Shoals rhythm section David Hood (bass) and Roger Hawkins (drums) are hired for the new LP sessions and fly to London.
Notes: David and Roger are sent to London to meet with the band by Tom Dowd. Tom asks them to check the band in their Roundhouse Rehearsal Studios.
From 2018 - Give Out But Don't Give Up - The Original Memphis Recordings: Dowd agreed to come to London on the condition that David Hood and Roger Hawkins went ahead of him, with instructions to report back if it turned out there was no meaningful musical dialogue between them and the younger musicians. "The only real trouble we had," Roger Hawkins would recall later, "was trying to understand what they were saying." In the north London studio, Dowd spent a lot of time listening to the early drafts of the songs, taking notes and conversing with the rhythm section. "I had the sense that he was still figuring out where we were coming from and what he could give us," says Martin Duffy, "You could see he was meticulous and he had a definite presence. My first reaction was, can we do this Then, I realised that, whatever happened, it was going to be a musical education."...

1993 - Henry Olsen leaves the band.
Notes: Henry would join the band in Memphis for the next LP sessions though. He did not play bass but would contribute during the initial recording sessions.

1993 - Johnny Marr remixes Pet Shop Boys’ I Want to Wake Up and features Denise Johnson

Sad And Blue
From 2018 - Give Out But Don't Give Up - The Original Memphis Recordings:
The education continued apace in Memphis in the summer of 1993, but not
before the musicians had a short sojourn at Muscle Shoals Sounds in Alabama,
David Hood and Roger Hawkins had played on so many classic soul records back
in the day. It was there that 'Sad and Blue' was written, the band working on early takes while, unbeknownst to them, the legendary local songwriter and musician, Donnie Fritts, watched from the wings. "He came over at one point and said, 'It's a good song, man,"' recalls Gillespie. "We were blown away." Afterwards, the singer, who cites Fritts's Had It All' as one of his favourite songs ever, chatted to the older rnusician about his long creative partnership the great country singer, Kris Kristofferson, the song he wrote for the likes of Percy Sledge and Arthur Alexander, and his cameo role in Sam Peckinpah's classic western, Pat Garret and Billy the Kid.

June / July 1993 - Ardent Studios, Memphis, Tennessee, U.S.A.
Notes: Produced by Tom Dowd. Engineered and mixed by Jeff Powell, assisted by Jeffrey Reed.
During the sesssions The Memphis Horns: Wayne Jackson - Trumpet. Andrew Love - Saxophone featured. As well as Denise, Susan Marshall & Jackie Johnson sang backing vocals. Charlie Jacobs played harmonica during the sessions. Former bass player Henry Olsen joined the band and played additional acoustic guitar over some of the tracks.
Andrew Love and Wayne Jackson of the Memphis horns sadly passed away before the 2018 release of The Original Memphis Recordings.

01 November 2003 Saturday 01.12 GMT - The Observer, Guardian, Ben Marshall Interview: "We arrived in Memphis and the first person we met sold us crack. Literally the first person. We only wanted to know where the cab rank was," recalls Bobby. By the following day Bobby was lying in a hot bath trying to sweat out the poison...
From 2018 - Give Out But Don't Give Up - The Original Memphis Recordings:
In November of the previous year, the group had recorded three songs for their Dixie Narco EP in Ardent studios, where the legendary Memphis group, Big Star, had created their finest work in the early seventies. Now Primal Scream wanted to dig deeper. "On the Dixie Narco songs, as with Screamadelica, the rhythm section was basically Andrew (Weatherall) alongside engineer, Hugo Nicholson," elaborates Gillespie, "This time around, though, we wanted to do things differently. We headed out to Memphis with the best intentions of making a soulful rock and roll record."
Having recently been discovered by Andrew Innes in a box in his basement, the tapes retrospectively make sense of the group's decision to return to Ardent Studios and to hire the legendary producer, Tom Dowd, and the veteran Muscle Shoals rhythm section of David Hood (bass) and Roger (drums)...
Dowd's main concern was that he was used to working with a traditional line up of drums, bass, keyboards, horns and sometimes strings. And, even though he had with seventies' rock groups like Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers, he seemed reticent to take on a band that did not have an obvious connection to the lineage of American blues and soul. He was impressed, though, with Gillespie's deep knowledge of, and passion for, that music.
Dowd agreed to come to London on the condition that David Hood and Roger Hawkins went ahead of him, with instructions to report back if it turned out there was no meaningful musical dialogue between them and the younger musicians. My first reaction was, can we do this Then, I realised that, whatever happened, it was going to be a musical education."...Back in Memphis, Tom Dowd, having recovered from a minor operation, quickly and quietly took control. "I had to establish a work ethic," he elaborated later. It began his insistence that they all turned up to the studio at the same time. "After that, it was really about getting them to listen and respond to each other. They were used to playing so loud that they could not hear each other. Once they found the confidence to play and listen, there was a new rapport all of a sudden, That was a big part of the coming-together process."
It a steep leaning curve for the band, as Innes recalls. "At first, it
really hard to play with a truly great drummer live in the studios guys like that are in charge. A not-so-good drummer will speed up with the guitarist. These guys don't speed up or slow down, they just keep behind the beats Solid as a rock. You have to learn to play their way."
For a time, Gillespie, too, felt a degree of even intense scrutiny that he had not experienced before. "For the first few days, I was really aware that Roger was looking at me all the time when we were playing. Eventually, I asked him why and he said, 'Man, I'm trying to feel what you are singing and I'll play as soft or as hard as what you give me.' It was amazing, a whole other level of concentration. Everything they do serves the song."
For their part, Hawkins and Hood were remarkably easygoing, curious to
see where the collaboration might lead. "I didn't know how it would work out," Hawkins recalled later, "But, I put everything I had in to it because I was having fun doing it." The Memphis veterans were particularly fascinated by the instinctibe musicianship of Martin Duffy, who, as a young teenager, had paid his dues playing country songs and pop covers in Irish dance halls across the Midlands and beyond." I learned a certain craft back then," says Duffy, "and I think those guys instinctively connected with that." Dowd, too, was simultaneously impressed and bemused by Duffy's keyboard technique. "He is brilliant at whatever he thinks to play or is inspired to do," he said afterwards. "And he is absolutely spontaneous, He will never play the same thing twice." ... Neither authoritative or, pushy, Dowd was, as Gillespie puts it, "a gentleman who quietly demanded respect."
"Basically Dowd pulled great performances out of all of us," says Gillespie, "but we also held our own with Roger and David and the Memphis Horns. They enjoyed their time us, too. I don't think too many bands of our generation could have done what we did in Ardent." One senses, too, that the release of The Original Memphis Recordings lays a few lingering regrets to rest. "I felt we went down there with such good intent, but somehow we lost our way afterwards" says Gillespie, "There's definitely a lesson to be learned about how creativity can go down the wrong track. We're a band that constantly keeps moving and doesn't look back, but, for years, I felt bad about us going to Memphis and not doing what we set out to do. Hearing these songs after all this time has made everything all right again. I feel redeemed."

1993 - Primal Scream visit Graceland
Notes: 01 November 2003 Saturday 01.12 GMT - The Observer, Guardian, Ben Marshall Interview: "Andrew Innes (one of the Primals guitarists) stood in the queue behind all these fat Americans. He wasn't feeling too good. I mean the guy had been up all night freebasing. He got to the front door and puked all over it..." He puked all over Graceland? "Yep," replies Bobby. "And he made things worse..." Is that possible? "Well, as security were dragging him away he shouted, 'First man to do that since the King!'"

July 1993 - Martin Duffy and Throb go to New York

July / August 1993 - Big Jet Plane Session, Ardent Studios, Memphis, Tennessee, U.S.A.
Big Jet Plane (Second Version)
Notes: Jim Dickinson Recording Session, this one would appear on the finished LP. Jim Dickinson died in August 2009.
From 2018 - Give Out But Don't Give Up - The Original Memphis Recordings: Confused and uncertain, the band went back into the studio a week later. There, they re-recorded one song, 'Big Jet Plane', with local Memphis maverick, Jim Dickinson, on Wurlitzer piano, in an attempt to make it sound "a bit more like the Burrito Brothers." In retrospect, Dickenson would have been the perfect producer for another kind of Memphis Primal Scream record — a more rootsy, blues-scorched, country tinged record. But, it was too late for that and, besides, as time has proven, these soulful songs did not need fixed. "Why on earth we went with the second version of 'Big Jet Plane', we'll never know," says a rueful Andrew Innes, "Dowd's first version is as good as it could ever be."

From 2018 - Give Out But Don't Give Up - The Original Memphis Recordings:
After a short break, during which Innes and Gillespie went to New Orleans, while Duffy and Young hung out and partied in New York, the group reconvened in the studios to hear the finished mixes. "To be honest," says Gillespie, "we were a bit underwhelmed. We wanted it to sound a bit more fucked up, but fucked up is not Tom Dowd does." Innes nods in agreement. "Maybe the punk rockers in us thought it was just a bit too sophisticated, a bit too grown-up."...

1993 - George Drakoulias Give Out But Don't Give Up Sessions
Rocks / Funky Jam
Notes: Alan McGee (Creation Records) was not happy with the finished recordings. He asked the band to re-mix and re-record with George Drakoulias (Black Crowes producer). The sessions included some new recordings too.
From 2018 - Give Out But Don't Give Up - The Original Memphis Recordings: Back then, at McGee's urging, the tracks had been reworked by producer George Drakoulias, famous for his work with the Black Crowes, and a few extra tracks had been added, including the George Clinton orchestrated 'Funky Jam'.
The result was an uneven record that baffled many fans and critics alike. God only knows what they would have made of the original, but, listening to it now, one thing is clear: this is 'the soulful rock and roll record' that Primal Scream set out to make...From 2018 - Give Out But Don't Give Up - The Original Memphis Recordings:
Back in London, Alan McGee was also underwhelmed when he heard the results of the Memphis sessions. He had never quite understood the band's reasons for wanting to work with Dowd and the Muscle Shoals rhythm section in the first place, perhaps because, as Gillespie now puts it, "he didn't really share
our passion for the blues or deep soul."
Plus, Creation Records had just signed a huge deal with Sony and a lot was resting on the much-anticipated follow up to Screamadelica. McGee's instinct from the off had been for the band to team up with George Drakoulias, who had helped forge the distinctively old-fashioned southern rock sound of the Black Crowes. "No disrespect to them, but we were coming from a very different place," says Gillespie. At the eleventh hour, it was Drakoulias who was drafted in to make the album sound more contemporary. When the group played him 'Rocks', he told Innes, 'I can't make this one any better but I can make it more stoopid." By that he meant, as the end result attests, more thunderously punchy, more gloriously glam-rock sounding like those classic Slade singles from the seventies. It was Drakoulias who put the thumping breakbeat on 'Rocks' and suggested that Young and Innes re-record the guitar parts so that the riff matched the stomp..."So in one way McGee's instincts were right.'

Call On Me
From 2018 - Give Out But Don't Give Up - The Original Memphis Recordings:
Other songs, though, went through even more torturous overhauls. At one
point, the band flew to Los Angeles for five days to re-record 'Call On Me' with Benmont Tench from Ton Petty's Heartbreakers on keyboards.

1993 - Alan McGee and Primal Scream meet Arthur Lee and later party with him, Evan Dando, Ride at Chateau Marmont
29 May 2013 Wednesday 18.08 BST The Observer, Guardian, Max Bell article:
In celebration of Creation's first decade, McGee has gathered together his 10 most personal mementoes. It comes as no surprise that what feature most among his choices are items that spark off memories of liaisons with some of rock's greatest mavericks...Arthur Lee - "The Primals were in Los Angeles doing the 'Memphis Sessions' with George Drakoulias, and while we were there, Rodney Bingenheimer took me and Bobby and Andrew Innes to meet Arthur Lee. Bobby asked him to sing on some stuff he was doing. "The thing about Arthur Lee, right, is he isn't out of his mind like Sky Saxon. Arthur kept the money, d'ya know what I mean? He showed up at the studio with a driver, and he walked in with a cocktail in one hand. "We got on brilliantly and there was a party later at the Chateau Marmont. Evan Dando turned up and the Ride boys were there and Arthur showed up, eventually. It was a big drug festival. I remember sitting round the swimming pool and Arthur was singing Love songs for Bobby. It ended up with them in a room jamming. That was a rock'n'roll moment. Not something you can buy. Fucking great. I mean, Arthur Lee and Bobby Gillespie. What more can you say?"

From 2018 - Give Out But Don't Give Up - The Original Memphis Recordings: Back in London and still feeling dissatisfied, they hired veteran drummer, Kenny Jones, from the Faces, to play on it. "Everything got a bit crazy," says Innes, shaking his head. " We were trying to fix a record that didn't need fixing..."

I'll Be There For You / Everybody Needs Somebody
Notes: Everybody Needs Somebody is a hidden bonus track. Jim Dickinson was once a Rolling Stones session musician. George Drakoulias of Black Crowes. Tom Dowd's CV included Aretha Franklin. David Hood (bass) and Roger Hawkins (drums) were once in the Muscle Shoals band that backed Aretha Franklin and Wilson Pickett, among others, in the late Sixties.
The cover of Primal Scream’s album Give Out But Don’t Give Up was a cropped 1980 photograph by William Eggleston, it was intended to signal their new southern-tinged sound. William Eggleston was a celebrated chronicler of the southern American landscape whose work often incorporates Confederate flags, overtly or covertly. Eggleston’s best known image may be 1973’s Greenwood, Mississippi, itself used as a cover for Big Star’s 1974 album Radio City. It depicts a bare lightbulb on a garish red ceiling, with white cables forming an X across it, like a subliminal Confederate flag. The Confederate flag was designed in 1861 by William Porcher Miles, an avowed pro-slavery secessionist politician. After the civil war, it became the prevailing way to represent the Confederacy, initially in the context of military history and memorials. It began to seep into popular culture in the 1940s, says John Coski, historian at the American Civil War Museum and author of The Confederate Battle Flag. It was adopted by southern fraternities and soldiers from the south used it during the second world war. It entered postwar politics via the pro-segregation Dixiecrats. In the early 1950s, the US developed a “flag fad” and suddenly it was everywhere: on T-shirts, licence plates and mugs. It became an icon for an attitude.

04 April 1994 - Herald Scotland Review by John Williamson: The mirror balls on stage and Bobby Gillespie's silk shirt were perhaps the biggest give-aways as to what to expect from Primal Scream's inevitably sycophantic homecoming. So, Primal Scream in 1994 may be little more than the sum of their record collections and carefully studied late sixties/early seventies concert footage, but Bobby's Full House at the Barrowland are treated to a captivating live show. The band manages to produce an intoxicating mixture of blues, rock, soul and gospel with more authenticity than either their Give-up But Don't Give Out album suggests, or any of their contemporaries have delivered. The sound on the opening Jailbird is appalling, but luckily it doesn't take long for things to lock into place: rock straddles the fine line between brilliance and mimicry, while a resurrected I'm Losing More Than I Ever Had slips effortlessly into Stay With Me as if any nod to its antecedents was necessary. Primal Scream are genuinely lucky in that their hired rhythm section gels seamlessly with the band, which contains three genuine stars in Gillespie, Robert Young, and Denise Johnson, who contributes both as a visual foil to the emaciated Gillespie, and vocally to give real soul to songs like Don't Fight it, Feel it. Come Together is a fitting climax to the set, mixing most of what makes Primal Scream a great live act. All that remains for Gillespie to achieve is to start writing lyrics which reach beyond themes of self-abuse and hedonism, and for the band to break convincingly free from the chains of both their own and rock'n'roll's less appealing pasts.

Notes: Last date of the Primal Scream...Know What I Mean Tour.
From September - October 1999 - On Target Magazine, Mani Interview: When the Roses split after Reading in the summer of '96, didn't you join the Scream halfway through the Vanishing Point sessions?
"Really, halfway through the last Scream tour of Britain it was like at Brighton Conference Centre and I'd had a whiff that John Squire was up to something. When we were recording The Second Coming LP we were in this residential gaff and I'd go across the corridor to his room you know 'cause I'd hear a tune coming out. I'd think 'Oh that's a new one. I've not heard it before' and as I'd knock on his door the fuckin' tape would go off. That was half of The Seahorses LP he's fuckin' preparing there so I knew he was planning sommut. So I kidnapped Bobby Gillespie after the Brighton Conference Centre gig and just sort of said to him 'How about it?' so in a way we did the deal six months before I actually left. I was pretty happy. I knew I was probably gonna be heading there, you know what I mean? I'm fucking glad I did. I'd only be in trouble with the police or sommut now (giggles)."

Notes:
From The Guardian Sunday 23 April 2006 15.06 BST article by James Brown:
We met again a while later in Leeds with a mutual friend who used to claim that he took drugs through customs for them.
'We never took drugs through customs, we sent someone ahead to buy them for us. You know around '94, when 'Rocks' was a hit, there was a lot of freebasing going on and I remember Bez from the Happy Mondays giving us advice on carrying the stuff. He just thought we were too vulnerable because there was so much about. I remember me, Douglas [Hart], Bez, Throbert... we thought we were above the law, a bit like [Pete] Doherty does now. And then there were times of trying not to use, going weeks and weeks, and then coming back to it and asking myself why.
'Right now, I'm OK. The drug I like best is speed, but no drugs are a big part of my life right now. I have my family and my band.'

From 25 March 1995 - Melody Maker magazine, Elastica interview by Simon Reynolds: So presumably Elastica don't approve of where the likes of Stone Roses and Primal Scream are at these days, i.e. retreating from rave in search of the rockist's grail of 'feel', jamming 'til the cows come home. "Well I try not to pitch battles with particular bands but it's definitely not my cup of tea," admits Justine, sounding at her most well-brought-up and tactful. "Backstage at an Oasis gig last year, Liam and Bobby Gillespie started ganging up on Donna, saying 'our music's all to do with feel and roots, and you're just shallow'. But for me, when you start relying on that traditional bluesy thing you're actually being more shallow. You're just sticking to a formula--a much stricter formula, in a way."

From November 1994 - NME Magazine - The Stone Roses are the subject of rampant rumours that they will be appearing with Primal Scream at their London Brixton Academy extravaganza on December 17....Primal Scream’s camp told NME: “You would not believe who we’ve got playing with us. Somebody so amazing you’ll crap yourself.” When asked for the official line, Scream PR man Jeff Barrett did not deny the rumours, saying only: “My lips are sealed.”...
The Dust Brothers would re-name themselves 'The Chemical Brothers', apparently reinventing themselves due to their change in drug use.

Notes: Denise sings along with the 'Lost Dog' backing tape before the band join in and launch into Jailbird. Lost Dog is a recent collaboration with George Clinton, see Police Doggy E.P. Keep on Tryin' still remains unreleased today. So Sad About Us is played the same as the original arrangement (The Who) rather than the B-Side recording made by Primal Scream.
The bootleg is confusing, neither have confirmed dates. Pretty sure it is recorded in Japan rather than the Rock N Roll Circus venue in Italy.
Both bootlegs are sourced from the same audience recording but both edit out different songs, for the complete show you would need to obtain both cds.

1995 - Primal Scream meet Robert Plant
Notes: Led Zeppelin legend meets the scream team.
14 March 2013 Thursday 16.25 GMT - The Observer, Guardian, Tim Jonze Interview: "It was 1994/95, before Vanishing Point," recalls Gillespie. "We were creatively blocked and pharmaceutically blocked. Everyone was pretty fucking depressed so we went down to the pub for a break. On the way we heard: "All right, lads," and it was Robert, giving us a wave." "He's a fanatic, knows all about music," continues Innes. "Not just blues stuff. He can talk about psychedelic music, techno, whatever." Discovering Plant was a believer in the band helped them get over the heroin-plagued sessions for 1994's Give Out But Don't Give Up, which both Gillespie and Innes credit as being the band's worst recording experience. "Put it like this," says Gillespie, "a couple of people around when we were making that record are dead now …

Bobby Gillespie attends The Stone Roses - 29 December 1995 Friday - Wembley Arena, Wembley, London
Notes: Bobby Gillespie catches up with Mani and they talk about the prospect of Mani joining Primal Scream.
From June 1998 - United We Stand Interview, Mani said: How did that move come about? "I kidnapped Bobby Gillespie on the last night of the Roses tour. I'd known him for years from doing E's at clubs in London and he was buzzing for it. That was a year and a half before the split. The Scream are a good band to be with because they don't change their beliefs for nobody. They can be mad on tour but I can hold my own with the best of them, don't worry about me."...

1996 - Primal Scream Vanishing Point Sessions, Primrose Hill, London
Star
Notes: Bobby, Andrew and Martin demo sessions.
24 April 2013 - Drowned In Sound web article by Dom Gourlay, Bobby Interview:
By the time we came to make Vanishing Point it was just me, Innes and Duffy, so we used drum machines and drum loops and we got Marco Nelson from The Young Disciples in to play bass. Then we brought in people like Augustus Pablo and The Memphis Horns to play on tracks like 'Star', but we made that record ourselves in our own studio in Primrose Hill.

1996 - Primal Scream Vanishing Point Sessions, Primrose Hill, London

1996 - Primal Scream's Studios, Primrose Hill, London
24 April 2013 - Drowned In Sound web article by Dom Gourlay, Bobby Interview: And then as a reaction to that we made Vanishing Point, which again was basically just me and Andrew Innes. (Martin) Duffy was there as well, Robert Young wasn't around, and Mani came in towards the end of Vanishing Point....

N - 29 October 1996 - Mani leaves The Stone Roses to join Primal Scream
Notes:
Mani tried to persuade Reni to join Primal Scream. Mani revealed years later that Reni 'couldn't be arsed'.
From Uncut Magazine 13 May 2016, Interview by Stephen Dalton: Uncut Magazine features The Stone Roses story MANI’S STORY How do the internal politics of Primal Scream differ from those of the Roses? “The Primals is more of a democracy, whereas with The Stone Roses we were more looking over our shoulder seeing if Ian and John were pleased. Because they were writing the songs and being touted as the Lennon-McCartney, Jagger-Richards kind of thing. For me now there’s a lot more freedom. Primal Scream are as good at bullshit detection as The Stone Roses ever were.”
Who’s a better singer, Bobby Gillespie or Ian Brown? “They’re both equidistant and beautiful. You can’t have one without the other, because Primal Scream and Stone Roses were running on parallel courses for years. Bobby went to the same gigs in Glasgow that me and Ian and John went to in Manchester. They’re mirror images of each other, except they wore shit-stopping trousers and winklepickers, and we wore baggy fucking jeans and Adidas trainers.”

M - November 1996 - NME (New Musical Express) Magazine
Notes: Mani officially announces his roses' departure. See The Stone Roses Media for the article.
"Mani said: “After much speculation, I’ve decided, along with Ian Brown, that it’s time to end the Roses saga. I will be joining Primal Scream, who are one of only three bands I would ever consider joining. I’m absolutely delighted and am relishing the opportunity of playing with Bobby and my friends."
“I wish Ian, Robbie, Nigel and Aziz all the best and hope that we will work together again in the future. I take the opportunity to thank our record company who have stood by us through thick and thin and to our fans worldwide for their total 100 per cent loyal support. It’s been a privilege to give these people a buzz and it wouldn’t have been possible without them.
“I wish Johnny and his new outfit a fruitful time, I hope they go on and smash it!”

M - November 1996 - Mani Interview in NME (New Musical Express) Magazine
Notes: Tommy Udo NME Interview at Mani's Home, Tuesday in Stockport. See The Stone Roses Media for the article. Mani said: “I’m chuffed to be joining the Scream, it’s like it’s just a little step to the left for me. And with us coming out of the same area… I love ‘em, you know. They’re a top bunch of lads. I think I’m probably gonna start with live work. I think I’m going to drop some bass on a couple of tracks from the new album. I’m just waiting to get given a tape of a couple of songs that they wanna redo. But I’m absolutely buzzing at the prospect. I was asked ages ago, so I thought I’d play it by ear. I told them if it didn’t work out with the Roses then I’d love to be involved. I’ve known Bobby a good few years, from when he used to come and hang around the Hacienda in Manchester, and we’ve always got on. I’ve got a lot of respect for the man Bobby Gillespie. He’s a dude.”...Mani said: “I was down the other week, I went off to their little bunker and heard what they’ve done so far. It’s great. It’s a real mix-up, there’s a blend of different styles going on there, all of which I’m right into. A bit of dub, a bit of funk. Nothing I can’t handle… I am the world’s greatest bass player after all! But I’m absolutely f---ing up for it!”
But has he done any photos with the band? “No, but I’ll have to get me leather keks and winkos out, won’t I?” he said.

1996 - Bobby sees Link Wray, London
18 May 2008 Sunday 11.20 BST The Observer, Guardian, Will Hodgkinson:
When I met my hero: Beans and Fatback, Link Wray (1973)
If I could play the guitar the way I'd like to, it would be in a style between Johnny Thunders and Link Wray. Both of them play reckless, dirty, sexy rock'n'roll. I saw Link play in London at the time Mani joined Primal Scream. He was doing all his hits, and we mobbed him afterwards because he blew our minds. He's known for his instrumentals that sound like being slashed by a switchblade, but Beans and Fatback is almost experimental. He's singing on it, too, which he doesn't on his early records. He only had one lung, but I love his voice.

Primal Scream
Bobby Gillespie
Andrew Innes - Guitar
Robert Young - Guitar

Paul Mulreany joins Primal Scream
Notes: Drummer Paul joined the band.
